Bhicks, what filament (brand/color) do you use for the Tan "Oak" cupholders? I'm wanting to use the same filament to print a Scangauge holder to go behind the steering wheel.

Thanks
There is no brand filament that is a color match for the tan Oak. I use black abs filament. My vendor is a private label company that makes a specific type of filament to meet my unique needs. I have to order a pallette at a time to get them to make me a unique ABS blend. Most name brand ABS filaments will work for small to medium sized parts. For the tan Oak paint; I use Rustoleum Textured Bronze. It's an exact color match. I buy it by the case from Home Depot. There are a few online vendors that sell it by the can. 3D Rax Gray ABS on Amazon is a good all purpose ABS filament for a great price.

Okay thanks for all the great info! I might try a wood filament to see how it turns out. I've always been curious about it so this might be a good project to try it out on.

Don't get too caught up in the "exotic" filaments crap. It's just saw dust poured into liquid plastic and then extruded out as filament. It's not actually wood. It's about 70% PLA plastic with 30% sawdust fill. It has the coloring and smell of wood but doesn't sand, stain, or hold paint anything similar to wood. Also has no structural properties similar to wood. The "metal" filaments are the same thing. 70%-80% plastic with metal dust melted into it. Has zero properties similar to metal. It looks somewhat metallic but can't be welded. The true metal 3D printers that actually use the metal powder with layers of laser etching start around 100k and go up from there. I badly wont one of those but am not going to sell my house just to get one.

Over the last few years I have been asked to create a 3rd row cup holder for the 80 series. There hasn't been a ton of requests so I felt the demand wasn't really there. The demand is here now due to a 4th kid in the family and now having my oldest boys in the back row all the time. I picked up some of those universal fold out cup holders on ebay. My boys broke the plastic ones within a few weeks. I purchased more since they are inexpensive and then I broke one while folding down the 3rd row and then broke the other when tossing my tool bag in the back. My boys never remember to fold them back up and I never remember to check. I purchased some metal ones which then cracked my entire interior wall panel when my son put his need into it. The metal cup holder survived but the plastic panel did not. I am now at the point where I need something functional and strong but doesn't hang on the interior wall panel. My idea/design is below. If I sell none of these then no biggie. I needed them for my personal use. I made a couple prototypes and sent one out to another mud member with cloth interior. I want to make sure they mount to the cloth as well as the leather without issue. It has been in my 80 for about 10 days and been used every day by my 5 and 8 year old boys. So far no issues. The cup holder mounts to the back side of the middle row. No hardware or adhesive needed. Simply hang it with the hook and your done. It can easily be removed and stored in one of the two side panel storage compartments when not in use. I made the hook 5" wide so it could hang entirely on one seat back. I did that so that if one of the middle row seats is folded down; the cup holder can still mount to the other and be fully secure. My original design spanned across both seats but I later realized that approach made removal of one of the middle row seats not possible. Hopefully 80 series owners with a bunch of kids will find some interest in this. I will make a small batch and put them up on my site next weekend if the other prototype fits on the cloth seats without issue. This should be in the $45 range. Here's some pics.

Are you planning on doing the liners inside there like all the other ones?

The liners work very well because I get to have three different major size choices.
The Large AMC Theaters cup fits with no liner (so does my Megaboom speaker!), my QT 44 oz cup fits with one liner, and my Starbucks Venti mocha half- caff-double latte with two half-pumps of light vanilla cream fits perfectly with both liners.

Since We put our 18 YO in the third row and lay down the left second row seat, he needs a place for his Super Mega-sized 20 oz. Dr. Pepper.

I like the design. Any screws or clamps to secure it with a top-heavy drink?

In regards to the liners, I didn't want something my kids could screw with. Those liners would be missing within minutes. I wasn't designing much for adults in the 3rd row. I was kid focussed on this project. My kids never have HUGE cups so I didn't see the need to have the removable inserts. In regards to screws or hardware; it's not needed. These are super tight and secure. I stuck a couple 44oz. fast food large cups back there to see how it would react. No issues at all. My kids would never have cups that big but I wanted to make sure it could handle that weight. These cup holder holes are the same basic universal diameter of 3.25" that almost all molded plastic console cup holders come with from the factory. They aren't a "fit all" type but they fit most.

Does the 91-92 middle row bench not have the fold down armrests? I'm getting conflicting info from mud members. If so, then the 80 series 3rd row cup holders would not work on the 91-92. If they do in fact not come with the fold down armrests; are there any other years that did not come with the fold down middle row armrest?

So no quick "half caffs" for the kids in the morning?

You would think my boys are running on 10 cups of coffee every day. Endless energy and many broken things. Our daughter is even worse.

Maybe they need some half caffs. I had a buddy that was like that and he mellowed right out once he had a cup of coffee in him. He was the first person that I knew that drank iced coffee. Same guy tried to ride his Schwinn Varsity around Lake Superior when he was 16. Something to ponder anyway...;)

Asking @LS1FJ40 ........

No fold down arm rests, anywhere, for 91-92.

None.

Zero.

Zilch.

Thank you for the clarification. I guess my 3rd row cup holders will be for the 93-97. I will need to track down a 91-92 in SoCal and see if I can come up with something for them.

So the 3rd row 80 series cup holder are in stock. I didn't make a large batch. Made around a dozen. I'm not thinking this will be a big seller but for the folks with 3+ kids; it will be nice to have. If they do in fact sell out quickly, I will make another batch and restock in a few days. Here's the link:

Looks like somebody already posted a link. Here's the link to my site. www.bh3dprinting.com. There are 6 different types of cup holders now available for the 80 series. There are singles, doubles, and inserts for the front and even the back (middle row). Feel free to ask questions. Might be easiest to send me a PM so I don't have another thread going on cup holders. Even I got sick of the cup holder threads and I'm the guy making the cup holders.

If somebody asked me what the "most usable mod was that made my 80 every day more practical and usable", it would be bhick's cup holders. Don't hesitate, just buy them. You WON'T regret it. My only input FWIW would be that a model with with the 2 cup holder on the shiftier pad with the cell phone slot closer to the driver and the flashlight holder towards the passenger would be perfect, but how it sits now I'm still extremely happy with it. I just like the easier access to my phone. I put it in the "single" center holder slot at times, but it can be awkward there if I have a big coffee cup.

I'm super pumped that I stumbled across this thread though, because i have 5 kids, so I'm buying the 3rd set tomorrow!

Thanks for the kind words. We don't really do marketing anymore. It's all by word of mouth and comments like yours that allow our little business to grow.

You're welcome, all true. I was actually starting to get the itch to sell the 80 after being spoiled over all the niceties that my Tundra's have. (Figured I could pool all my resources to get a 200.) It just started feeling annoyingly cramped by comparison. I actually had a GX470 for a year, but sold it for that very reason. (I guarantee you would find a GX470 market to do something similar. If you hit those forums / clubs, the main bitching is usually about the crappy cup holders.)

With 5 kids, or driving a group of friends to races, little things like lack of storage drive me CRAZY. I took a gamble and bought the double front from you as well as the double middle row right before a relay race where we were in the car all day with 4 adults. Holy crap it was a night and day difference. Felt like I was in my wife's Sequoia. Made me decide to keep the 80 for a while longer and dive back into building her up again. :hillbilly:

I just ordered the 3rd row set! (My kids always complain that there isn't anywhere to put things like in the Sequoia.)

The only cup-holder my 80 has is the one next to the drivers seat attached to a std factory centre console. It's location isn't very convenient and to use it requires taking one's eyes off the road ahead.

I've seen people on here making cup holders for a single cup that go into the front space of a factory centre console but that's only useful for one person. ;)

I'm dead-set against fitting a pop-out cup holder thingy in one of the two DIN spaces in the dash, and my bottom DIN space is occupied already by a Blue Sea power distribution block.

The std factory centre console isn't very practical but it's better than not having one at all.

Has anyone every created a two cup holder that can suit both small drinks (like std cans, water bottles, etc.) and large ones (large coffees, and large takeway fizzy drinks, etc.) that mounts to a std factory centre console but positions the cup-holders above and out of the way of both the front open space and the hinged lid?

I thought everyone knew about these and I didn't have to post about them anymore. I guess there is one left. Here's a few of my designs.
