Ya D60 HD sorry, I was looking at the arbusa application guide:
Front 1977-90 Dana 60HD 38.1 (1.50") 35

http://arb.com.au/media/products/air-lockers/application_chart.pdf

The article does in fact say 1.5" 35 spline shafts in the rear.

can you elaborate on how and on what carrier it has been done?
Is it a matter of mixing parts or is it sending off parts for machine work?
Im not sure exactly what you are saying.

If you upgrade the shafts to D70 or D60HD diameter, then you're moving the failure point to the hub studs and / or the diff itself. How strong is the 9.5" Toyota diff exactly? Strong enough to warrant that upgrade?

from ARB's tech guy:

Hi Cody,

The RD142 is only available in the stock 30 spline configuration. The RD142 does use the same gear set as the 30 spline Dana44, which means the 35 spline gear set for the Dana44 will fit inside the RD142. The problem, however, is that the journal opening in the RD142 will not accept a 35 spline shaft due to the restriction of the 50mm bearing ID. Strength would certainly be an issue if the journal was bored open to accept the 1.50” diameter 35 spline shaft as that would leave only 6mm of journal thickness.

Best Regards,

I guess it works but ARB doesnt think it will...

Edit: Im not sure if the diff is going to be stronger than the axle shafts, but then the issue may be longfields twisting in your e-locked or who knows maybe even air locked side gears. Though with a thrust bolt, it could be moved from the gears elsewhere. Im sure your pinion or driveshaft or t-case might go pop first, but I guess this sport is about finding those limits and pushing them. And now that you can get 6 bolt d60 unit bearings and flange kits well...

Not trying to be difficult, just trying to figure out all of the variables.

Cody.

I just picked up this" 4x4 garage toyota edition" magazine. It has some pics of Ben Swains (w/ Slee Off road)axles on his rig. It mentions that he modded a 9.5" rear to accomodate 1.5" 35 spline (sounds like D60*HD*) shafts for the rear. I sent an email to ARB asking if they could swap side gears to run this size of shafts, and they basically said they could only go to a different spline.

Anyone know a little more about what was done and what can be done to go to larger rear shafts, maybe only the E-locker rear third has room for bigger side gears?

This is what I mentioned earlier about the diamond axles, I thought it was someone else's though.

If I remember right that rear end was welded. No diff options were available that worked so they put an odd set of side gears in it and welded it.

why the fucck would you want a 35 spline 8 inch diff? Thats dumb.

Why would someone build a 9.5 drop out with 35 spline s*** also?

Is this just toyota purist crap? Whats the gain?

Seems dum to cut up a good D60 to build a half assed toy axle out of it.

Who cares..

People do all sorts of odd crap.

If you already have the third's set up. And you have the outers, it is not a far fetched idea.

Not the best idea in the world, but there are dudes that make rear steer Toyota axles as well. :meh:

I wasnt doubting you when you said it could be done, was just wondering who does it. Just because ARB doesnt want to try it doesnt mean someone else wont get it done, I just didnt know the details you did.

Thanks for posting the link.

Chop shop, you must work at Slee? or know the fella who built the axles?

I would have been interested to see if the e-locker or open diff's side gears could be broached,? Sounds like just welded in for the lack of thickness of material after machining or lathing?

Copy and paste from Mace's link:

Want a 1.5" 35 spline shaft in your Min-Truck or Land Cruiser axle?
We had a batch of Air Locker side gears rebroached to fit the RD33 and RD124 Air Lockers; these fit the FJ40, 60, and 80.
http://www.wildwestfab.com.... WILD WEST OFF ROAD 360-264-5363

AND NOW we have a batch of mini-truck side gears in stock. You can now convert your RD23 to a 35 spline Air Locker!

We can supply you with a brand new RD33 (FF) or RD124(C-clip) Air Locker with the 35 spl. side gears installed and the end caps machined to take the larger diameter shaft. OR We can supply you with the side gears to upgrade your lockers (you will need to do a little machining to your end caps). OR We can machine your end caps and install the gears in your Air Locker

Though I think he means the RD 142 and not RD124

Its interesting how close in diameter to the D60 the toyota axle shafts are.

Tech Tim used to be the face of ARB on the pirate board. Essentially, he was ARB for quite a while.

I am not positive when he switched to wabfab. I thought that he did it while he was at ARB. But I could be mistaken.
