Not just elk who are in mating season. Followed this guy thru our dog yard. Went out and headed back in. Convinced him that isn't what he wanted to do.

Pretty common to see them in the neighborhood this time of year. Now too concern what happened to Camp Verde in the 1977 movie Kingdom of the Spiders. But you never know.

great to see these areas recovering like this. what size bike is that?

Sadly it's the Ponderosa pine forest that doesn't come back. Mt Eden hasn't recovered from the fire in 1978. Other flatter areas pines forests are being replaced by other type of trees. Mt Eden just looks sad more than forty years later.

Think it was the second year after the Wallow fire my buddy drew an elk tag. We found them, seems like they liked hanging out in those post burn aspens.
Brutal, we could hear them, smell them, almost reach out and touch them, but other than the occasional brown flash, could never see them.

These are some of the better hid elk in the neighborhood.

These were probably 40' off our front deck. I have spotted some in the neighborhood bedded down that would drive by four or five times in a span of a couple hours. Remember going on hunting trips and flash is the most I would see. Remember one time in the forest with a very strong smell of elk. Few seconds later around twenty of them popping up and running off. Wasn't hunting but was cool to see.

That ride up from Taos along the Rio Grande gorge is epic, and Red river is gorgeous. Years ago, but we jumped on a forest service road to the upper lake, still snow on the ground in July. Cool memories. I have pictures somewhere in the '72 FJ40...
Me, the wife, and dog Merle on our way to Montana.

It is the random picture thread so …how about the dial on this Grand Seiko? Not my picture but got the watch a while back. Gotta love Japanese craftsmanship.

Checked out fall colors again yesterday. Didn't go the rim instead went to Flagstaff. No four wheel drive required. Plenty colors to see in the center islands on the streets, in front of businesses and parking lots. I know other than the Aspens most these trees are non native to Northern Arizona. While would love to plant some survival rate where wildlife could get to them would be low.
My neighbor had elk this morning. Airing the dogs before sunrise one spotted them and they all start barking. One cow looked up the other two cows and the bull just continued eating grass. This place has been getting like a preserve last couple of years.

Poor picture of the bull which was definitely smaller than the one yesterday.

Rut may be over? And the big guy is frankly exhausted.. :meh: :hmm:

Very possible getting towards the end of the rut. All the other groups have been a single bull. Still here bugling, but not as much. Found it interesting even during the rut bulls were grazing during the day. Definitely cooling down here. Low was 25° last night. Just over a week ago had the doors open in the evening. One night had a bull in the front of the cabin and one in the back bugling at each other. Unfortunately the dogs started barking and they moved off.
