Yes you can fit locking hubs, a search will net the info. For the '90-92 a part time transfer conversion kit is available.

Oh, welcome to Mud!

I think you need to spend a weekend and a couple hundred $ with cdan from this board and do a front axle job. This will fix the leaking seals and absolutely indicate what's going on inside. Once you have completed this, the front axle should be good for another 100,000 miles or so.

It's probably a drive flange., I have seen a few in 91-92 vehicles. If you are lucky the splines on the birf will be OK. In a worst case you will need a drive flange and a birf.

Popped off the dust cap and put it in gear and the axle just spun in the flange. Not a whole lot of metal shavings so I'm assuming its just the flange. I'll know when I pop it off. So When I do the axle seals do I want to do both sides at the same time or wait for the other to leak first?

well, look at it this way, if the truck wasn't moving except in Low and it's just the flange, you probably got it for way cheaper than you should have cuz the seller thought it was dying, and it'll cost little to fix (assming the shavings didn't go too many places...)
good for ya!

With 155K and never been serviced, I would do the whole deal, swap sides on the birfs and all new seals and gaskets, then you know it's good to go. If your thinking gears or lockers this is the time to get that done too.

Can't really afford lockers right now. The 2000 I spent on buying this was supposed to be the lockers for my scout. Anyway I'll wait to hear from Dan on a seal and bearing kit and got to work on this bad boy.

That's good news. A drive plate (maybe makes sense to replace both sides as the other drive plate was also stressed) and an axle seal kit and you've got a low mile 80.

If you have had a Dana 60 apart, I would think you are handy enough for the full front end service, no worries.

I did it in one try and I usually take 4-5 so I know you can do it!

Good year to get by the way ;). 3FE is a tank of an engine.

Pulled the flange off today and the flange and the spline on the axle shaft were toast. The axle shaft wasn't as bad as the flange but showed definate wear and I wouldn't trust it. The axle seals are leaking like sive so I'm going to order a gasket kit and hopefully find a good buy on a axle. Is it connected to the birfield? I think I remember it is all one piece. Anyway two LC in the wreckages here. One has all the flares and they said they'd sell them for 35 bucks a piece so I think I'll bite the bullet. They also have one birfield left but said they wanted 150 bucks for it and I said no way.
