Hello fellow Canadians.
I'm not new to the FJ owners world, but pretty much ignorant to the FJ scene in Canada. I left Ontario in the late '70s and went overseas.

I posted a pic of my 1983 daily driver. Old cruisers are good and plenty here - and not sought after - so, not to brag, but I have a white '84 all stock and pretty clean unit that I will begin to restore soon - just like the one I did in the pic - except it wil be all original. I used to have a 79 FJ40 when I lived in the jungles of Brunei.

It seems that you call it BJ40 where I call it FJ40???
It seems there are Troopies in Canada??? - troopies that look exactly like my pic, but with a longer rear end.

My question just now is - are the any 1983's and 84's FJ-40's in Canada and the same for Troopies - are they around and until what year?

Appreciate some feedback.

The letter(s) before the "J" indicate an engine family, the numbers after the "J" indicate a body style family.

The BJ and HJ engine families are diesel, the FJs are petrol.

This link may be helpful http://cc.oulu.fi/~thu/LC/tech/history.html

"Troopies" are a body style in the 45 and 75 series; they have 2 side doors, a long wheel base, and "barn" style rear doors with OEM seating arrangements for upto 11 people. They're pretty and relatively rare here.

This site has lots of pics of different body styles http://www.toyotalandcruiser.dk/modeller/

Dear desertpat,

Please start exporting those unwanted 1983 and 84 BJ42's (Diesel FJ40's with 3B diesel in it) into Canada, they are very scarce, the US and Rust is taking them all from us poor Canadians. Rust free ones in Canada would be un heard of, so if they are not perfect it does not matter, we are not picky.:D If not the BJ42's then we can settle for some nice HJ45's, both troopies and pickups, either way it will make us happy!
Cheers,

Yes please. Start sending them over.
I like tan BJ42's.

However, somehow I wonder if the mechanics would similar to central america.
IE. Bandaid the problem and not fix it.
IE. Electrical tape on brake lines?

Cheers,
Nick

Hey guys, Saudi Arabia is an oil exporter where gas is cheap. They don't bother with the diesel engines.

I'll take a well-priced clean 40 series troopy in a gasser. All that needs to be done is rip out the gaspot and drop in a 12H-T. Zoom zoom! :)

I know where there is an extra 1HD-T and locking axles. :) :D

Cheers,
Nick

Here they are - chewing gum for the eyes

Hi guys,
I went to the car lot today and checked out the pick'ins. Not a great selection compared to other visits - but not hopeless. I did tell them to locate more '84's - good ones only.

In the pic is 2 FJ-40's and 2 FJ-45 troopies, 1984, 1981, and 2 1983 troopies.
These vehicles are cosmetically rough - the dashes are cracked (the sun is killer here), usually the head liner has been re-done (it usually falls off from the heat) and the seats have been re-covered. Mechanically, they run - the oil pressure is in the normal range - I didn't ask them to start any of these today. (from past visits). Saudis, I must say are not big on maintenance - they send them in to the shop and 3rd world mechanics fix them - but not always professionally.

The metal is excellent throughout - you wouldn't be disappointed (this is the desert). Some have air cons - in part (usually no compressor). Some have heaters. All have drum brakes all around and split rims - 16". Some full floaters. There is no emission stuff. There is no tape on the brake lines - stuff like that.

The troopies are cleaner looking.

The 1984 '40 and 1 of the troopies would be my pick.

To get 1 of these landed on the west coast of Canada would be not less than C$12,000.

Long ago I got a quote to send one home (Ontario), I would have to check again. I have not gotten the price of de-registerring them, exporting other costs, etc. But I reckon the cost above would not be far off.

I can export them - someone there needs to be an importer.

cheaper out of oz or SA, and about the same condition i would guess (just a guess), but RHD and most likely diesel. if you were looking at doing an engine swap, build up, etc.. the price starts to really climb. 12k is a big number to start at.

shipping must be a bitch.

many want, few are willing to pay.

crusty

Cost Explanation

Gents,
The lions share of the cost is shipping - in a container. The cost would go down by 2 to $2500 (so I hear) for "roll on - roll off" - in this case, someone will have a key and drive it onto the ship. That scares me .... my wife sent a teak dining table set and china cabinent from Bangkok to here, and a fork truck skewered the glass doors - completely through!
The shipping quote I asked for long ago was to the CDN east coast.

The vehicle cost is a bit over 3K - plus transfer / register to me cost, safety inspection cost ( on paper only inspection), then de-register for export, transport to docks, insurance, and an agents fee.
On your end would be import tax, agent fees, registration, etc.

For an '83 or '84 model, gas engine and left hand drive with excellent metal, it's not so bad, I reckon.
I have seen a similar offer in the USA, a vehicle from Saudi being sold as is - and asking US$21K. Maybe it didn't sell for that?

At the end of the day, I don't need to make a killing. But any potential purchaser must be prepared to spend some money for the "Holy Graille".

Thanks,

I don't know, 12,000 seems a little high, but if the body was mint, I could see myself buying a troopie or pickup in the future. At least you wouldn't have to mess around with that damn rust fixing effort.
Cheers,
Deny
