I stole the whole cruise setup off of an 89 4Runner with a 3.0 and 5 speed. I'm going to try and swap it into my 89 with the 22RE.

Question: Both trucks have cable spedometers, the cruise computer gets its speed signal from the "speed sensor (in combination meter)"

I do not see any notes on V6 vs. 4 cylinder on the wire diagrams, so can I assume that my dash will have one? (My dash is actually out of an 84...) The 85 wiring diagrams show the same speed sensor...

Next question, I'd rather set it up to use the tach signal, so I can use it as a hand throttle also. Anyone see any drivability issues with that set up, and does anyone know if it can be done?

Thanks for any insight!

*Studying for summer session finals..let me look at things this w/e and see if there'd be anything I can add. :)

Personally, I would think that using a cruise control as a hand throttle would defeat the safety release function, like if you hit the clutch or brakes...did you go with the mechanical version then that is usually on the left fender versus the electronic one (right fender mounted) like mine?

It's the cruise actuator that is on the drivers fender and goes back through the fire wall and actually manipulates the gas pedal....

All safeties will be in place, but if I can run it with the tach signal in stead of the speed signal, then I can use it as a hand throttle, because I'm sure it won't engauge and hold an RPM setting if it's getting a no speed indication...

I see the problem, ok, not like a hand throttle, but like an idle up system.... make more sense? :D

The hand throttle system will be later.... and totally separate.

The only issue I see is weather I can swap from the speed signal to the tach signal and still have it work... I look forward to your thoughts!

No worries Grasshopper :D..I looked at stuff today briefly and I say give it a try but use a low amp fuse that'll blow at the first sign anything's funny. Start with a 5 or 7.5 and head out somewhere where you won't hit any trees or people. ;) Heck if it works it would be marketable to the disabled community. Better yet, check with disabled driver's services, there probably already has been a version made and out there to pull schematics from!

Ok, it's the weekend, time to talk about my truck! :D

First off, can someone(s) with an 88 or 90 FSM, post a pic of the cruise control wire diagram please??? I have an 89 FSM and the Cruise stuff came off of an 89, but there are still a few wires that it does not show..... I'm thinking it may have been an early or late 89 and caught a different wiring scheme....

I guess I'll start on the install in the morning. Fun fun fun!!!!!!!!

The12volt.com says the speed signal is 4000 pulses per mile..... 1989 Toyota 4-Runner Cruise Control Wiring Information

Which sounds like it's in the realm of a tach signal.... But I still don't know the nature of the signal...

Keep in mind that a speed signal @ 4000 pulses per mile is a fixed value where a tach is an unfixed signal that can and will vary over the same distance depending on gear selection and the amount of pedal (*thus cable tension) input.

IOW any change in signal may result in either a cancelled hold or worst case a locked hold.

I don't think the pulse # will be the issue, if it's 4000 pulses per mile then at 60 mph that's 4000 pulses per minute. The tach signal would be between 2500 and 5000 at 60 mph depending on which gear you're in... However, the speed signal seems to be an intermittent ground signal, and the tach is probably an intermittent +12V? Can anyone confirm that???

If that's the case then I may be out of luck... I doubt a relay is going to be able to handle 5000+ pulses per minute.....

Ok, so I've hooked the whole thing up now, but it's not working yet. I didn't think it would as it didn't work in the truck I stole it out of... :D

First question, for anyone with an 84-89 Cruise system: On the "master switch" on the dash, there's one button that turns on the system I would guess... when you push this button a small led type light comes on. Mine does this, but there's a second larger light that's behind a green plastic lens. Does this larger light come on with the dash lights, or does it come on when cruise is engaged? That's the last bit of wiring to do.

Second, can someone with a 84-89 cruise system that works check the vacuum actuator for me? Mine has one vacuum line and a 3 wire connector that goes to it. When I hook a vacuum pump to the actuator I am getting a slow leak off of vacuum... It doesn't drop like a rock, but it is not holding vacuum, I'm thinking that could be my issue. So if someone has a vacuum pump and can take a minute and check for me that would be great! Thanks!

That larger green light has nothing to do with the cruise system. It shines a light on the ignition switch so you can insert the key in the dark. Pretty cool, only 4Runners got them.

Oh yeah! :D Hmmm too bad I've moved the Cruise switch from it's stock location because my locker switches are there now..... Maybe in the future I'll get a new dash and move things around.... :p

Ok, so who has a vacuum pump to test their actuator for me????? Eh???? C'Mon! :D

Bump, c'mon slackers! Or does not one have a working CC?? :D

I have confirmed that the V6 speed signal from the back of the speedo is the same as the 4 cylinder (mine is actually out of an 84). I found one wiring issue, I put a spade connector back into it's plug in the wrong spot, so the clutch safety switch wasn't working right.... cause it wasn't "hooked up"... oops, I think I'll go give it a try tonight, but I still think the vacuum actuator may be toast...

It's a full stock cruise setup. I basically cut all the parts out of the other truck. I took the actuator/cable/ and brackets, the computer, main switch, and the turn signal/wiper switch assembly, and the switches from the brake and clutch pedals. Then I wired it all up over a few days, it was pretty confusing. I would not recommend this swap to someone that's not electrically savvy. I'm going to test it out today on a real hill :D We'll see if it'll floor it like I have to.... Hehehe

I also wanted to mention that after I siliconed the diaphragm I coated all the cured silicon with graphite lube to keep it from sticking to it's self. So far it's working well, but I think I need to do some adjustment so it can get the pedal to the floor..... I think the diaphragm is bottoming out before it is getting full throttle... :D
