Proper way to wear face masks per Russian Police:

Upside is the social distancing orders are working to reduce infection rates: this will help keep hospitals from being overloaded and doctors from having to take the same measures Italy saw: choosing who lives and dies. It doesn't reduce the final count of patients, but spreads it out over time so it doesn't overwhelm the medical community and they can help as many as possible.

I am just waiting to see how this all pans out. Just my humble opinion at this point, compared to H1N1 (9-10 years ago)?
As a parent, I am more concerned with my kids economic future if this keeps dragging on.

f I catch the bug from those not social distancing my survivors get to sue their collective arses for negligent homicide.

ps: Here's an early paper on undocumented cases: they figure a documented rate of 14% for their modeling; using that figure, we have about 7x the documented number of cases. https://science.sciencemag.org/content/sci/early/2020/03/13/science.abb3221.full.pdf

Ha ha - but wait: Murder or manslaughter? Does vigorous stupidity excuse premeditation? I'm looking at Ammo Bundy's Easter gathering of Branch Covidiots in Idaho...

Undocumented cases--really interesting.

In March I plotted the total number of tests against positive test fractions for all 50 states. The numbers were too small for statistical validity, but, spit-balling, the curve suggested actual infection exceed test-confirmed cases by one to two orders of magnitude.

It's almost certainly true that there are way, way more actual than test-confirmed cases, and that social distancing measures are suppressing infection and death among the public, first responders and docs and nurses.

By my read, we need a coherent plan to (1) not needlessly murder tens or hundreds of thousands of ourselves, (2) suppress the virus pending a vaccination, and (3) reopen society--in that order of importance.

To do that we need to know who's had it and who hasn't--widespread testing.

It's still a fuzzy idea, but...

What if we had, like, a centralized collection of resources and power--some entity that we all pay into each year, an entity whose core purpose was to ensure the general welfare? It could have technocrats and institutions to design and deploy a plan and testing across all 50 states, prioritizing needs among them. It could leverage collective resources for the common good.

I'll report back when I think of a name for that.

In the meantime, I've found that bleach wipes are great for social distancing Land Cruising -- especially for the handle, keypad and card cleaning at the gas pump.

What concerns me is when everyone panics, those that don't know better, look to the gov't for help and to "fix" it. Step 1 cause panic, step 2 come to the rescue. I get the mass testing for comfort but that looks an awful lot like control. Reminds me of the movie Contagion. Get the vaccine, get the wristband, good to move freely. Conspiracy side coming out in me. Micro chip next?! Have heard stories from friends seeing people get freaked out on just for not having a mask.

Well, this administration isn't capable of fixing a toilet, let alone handling a pandemic: their ineptness is the worst part of this for me, and expecting them to come to the rescue? Good one. As for microchips, that's funny. An RFID tag injected just under the skin like they do for tracking fish that have been released from hatcheries would work. But why bother when everyone has a cellphone glued to their ears? Apple & Google are already working on push-apps to communicate with nearby phones to allow people to share their COVID-19 status. I can see them including HIV, HSV, and a few other friendly diseases without asking, too.

As for people in public without a mask? Depends on the situation, but if coughing, they should be freaked on. Why the eff they even out and about when they are sick? Total antisocial behavior and shows a complete lack of respect for everyone else.

A mask protects everyone. It is simple courtesy to wear them when in public around other people. Masks have saved lives in Eastern countries because they aren't stigmatized that a mask is bad. Western countries, not so much, and we could learn from others.

it's obviously overblown

What part of Kills 1 out of 100 people is hard to understand? Sure, it might be as low as 1 out of 200... though so far it's 24,000 out of 587,000 tested: about 4 out of 100. Yep, overblown for sure. You haven't noticed because people who understand the severity of the problem are doing something about it and telling folk to stay home.

Prolongs the BS IMO. Hopefully the state re-opens after April 30th. All of this over the flu.

Calling a SARS virus the flu shows an amazing level of ignorance. Seasonal flu kills 6 per 100,000: the SARS-COV-2 is killing as many as 3,400 per 100,000; and even more than that here in the US.

Starting a thread Posting to a thread such as this with “chat” in the title you must be prepared for a variety of opinions. Insulting participants in your the “chat” is not too nice imho.
Perhaps you could rename this as “Covid-19 my truth only”.

Edited 2020-04-15 to reflect that the thread was not started, but was an assortment of posts collected from another thread.
Also struck out my snarky un-helpful comment.

Here's an interesting read for those following the statistics: it is a case study of the Diamond Princess: the floating COVID-19 lab where it is pretty easy to look at the illness: all cases, asymptomatic cases, symptomatic cases, and real death rates. The authors found 0.91% of passengers and crew died, even with people trying to self quarantine. And that half of those infected had no symptoms at all.

How else can you describe lack of common knowledge? Is it acceptable to let a person say something that is an outright lie when talking about a serious topic?

I accept the criticism, and you are right to offer it. But the subject matter isn't a discussion of ARB vs OME lockers where opinions are just that. This is a discussion of an illness that is killing friends and neighbors.

ps: I have friends who have it so I am affected, and it angers me people are treating this as nothing based on ignoring the facts.

Silly me, I was hoping the chat thread would be tips on finding TP & rice and dealing with social isolation.
I can go to a hundred other websites to get buried in data.
I can hear my wife pleading “disengage, disengage”

disengaging now for sanity’s sake:deadhorse:

I wasn't saying at all for the govt to rescue, opposite actually. My point was those looking to gov't to fix will find fail. No administration would have handled this correctly. Yes the microchip was supposed to be funny, and sarcastic...but will come to that IMO eventually. And yes situational on the mask wearing, didn't say anything about someone being out who was sick, my point was some were catching flack for no reason. That's how these convos go though. No intent to rouse by me and I'm sure the same by you. Opinions only and all civil from my end.

Flu in US kills roughly 35K per year. Not realizing it IS a flu virus shows your level of ignorance. The media can spin it any way they want to promote fear and panic but in the end it is a flu virus. Media has really done the public a disservice, almost have to wonder if that was the agenda from the start? It certainly has created that.🙄

Corona virus and SARS are not the same thing. Wow quit spreading this BS. Are you a journalist or in the media? I would expect that from them. I guess your are a PHD in Epidemiology? So much for discussion.

He didn't start this thread. I moved all the COVID-19 posts from ROTM thread to this new thread. I named this thread, I thought chat was appropriate at the time.
