I bet they did. If you ever saw the movie War Games several of the scenes were actually filmed in the "mushroom hole" as my Dad sometimes called it. In fact, they did sometimes run war game scenarios on the vast computer systems that required rooms and rooms full of hardware. It could all probably be done today on a laptop...
