After we get on 170 we will head to the western entrance of Big Bend Ranch State Park, about an hour of scenic drive from Lajitas. Check in at the ranger station, then head into the interior. Hour of paved road, then head off-road for the rest of the weekend. Couple hours trail ride will take us to campsite for Sat night, Guale Mesa area of the park. Build a BIG fire, drink on that whiskey. View from the campsite
Next morning plan is to head toward the El Solitaro, around 2.5hrs of non improved road right in the heart of the park. I've got several maps coming my way, so won't know the exact route for a couple more days, but word is the deep interior is pretty unreal territory.
We will end up around El Solitario, do the Soliatario Loop around the exterior, then head into the interior on the famous 'Road to Nowhere'
Sign at the end of the Road to Nowhere
From there we decide if we are camping that night or headed out of the park to get a head start home. if we camp it will be at Tres Papalotes site, right on the edge of El Solitario. Head out from there either that evening or early the next morning and hump it home.
