This and my quick pre-pre- trip next month is prob all I can do till January. Cabo in Mid November.

This the official fuc off at work and daydream about places you'd rather be thread. I love it.

As it relates to "overlanding", this article resonated with me (related carry-over from the discussion we were having in the movie thread before the usher shined a light in our face and kicked us out).

I'm thinking if they put the new motor that the Tacos are getting in 2016 then I would wait. The 4.0 is a turd

...but a reliable turd

I drove a 2014 or 13 4runner (rental) for a week across TX and AR and was pretty happy with the setup. Great running vehicle

Bringing this back to Overland discussion, my comment on the 4.0 being a turd was not specific enough. Sorry.

I know @pmccraney is looking for the right vehicle to replace the <cough> pilot he is currently driving.

The 4.0 is a super reliable motor and I would not hesitate to buy a vehicle with one for reliability.

Mileage sucks. HP sucks. I think the 3.4 V6 was WAY better.

In fact, a 4.0 4 Runner may get 2-3 mpg better than a stock 100 series. Add a bigger tire to the 4.0 and mileage really goes out the window.

So, if I was in the market for a 2015 4Runner I would wait on the new 3.5 liter that will be in the 2016

This is all for my over landing needs :)

On the overland topic, I've been going back through pics of every 'overland' trip I've been on in the 100, gonna start cataloging all this on a webhost so i don't have to worry about keeping track of pictures on 10 different PCs and tablets.

Anyway, found this file I made for the afternoon trip (2011) my wife and I spent around the Rocky Springs area in Central MS. Was a great 1/2 day ride, someone wanting to get their Land Cruiser into some 'overland' driving (cough cough @MScruiser ) could take this and hit the road.

It's not a one-day spin, but here's an example of a "doable" extra-long weekend trip:
  • Jackson to Collinsville / Gadsden / Mentone, AL (Little River Canyon [you'd never believe you're still in AL], DeSoto State Park)
  • Mentone to Oliver Springs, TN (WindRock OHV area)
  • Oliver Springs to Tellico Plains, TN / Murphy, TN (it appears a large amount of Tellico OHV area has reopened)
  • Tellico Plains, TN / Murphy, NC to Robbinsville, NC via Cherohala Skyway (Joyce Kilmer Wilderness Area / Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest)
  • Back to Jackson, possibly via the bottom of TN (Jack Daniels distillery and possibly into AL to Hawks Pride - if it hasn't rained in a month)
This trip is best the latter part of October / first part of November, as the leaves will be in full change-mode. There have been years I've seen the northeastern Alabama leaves rival ones anywhere in the country.

Granted, a lot of the trips on this thread will be predominantly road driving, but as long as the "getting there" trip is interesting (plenty places to see, eat, camp/sleep), it doesn't matter much. I know my tendency is to default to the TN/GA/SC/NC areas, but I think it's largely because I see it as being "reachable" on long weekend excursions.

Great trip. I've got that area on my list. I likely would have gone that way instead of Big Bend had I not just driven in from Asheville

Also, the Smokies in the summer are stupid crowded.

Little River looks so cool

Yeah, little river canyon is just one of those things you can't believe is actually in Alabama....

Been there (in a Subaru though).

And yeah, Mentone is beautiful.
