True on all counts. My main interest is mapping apps so the Back Country Navigator is what I use so therefore stick with android while everyone else in our house are apple addicts. I can't run an iPad or iPhone.

The Ram Mount Tab Tite is the tablet cradle I use. Lots of options for pretty much any iPad. They have all the same options for droids too.

This is the mount arm that works best. It mounts to the seat bolt of passenger seat, so no drilling needed. I actually have their 'flexible arm mount' but don't buy that it vibrates too much.

I'm currently using an iPad and iPhone, but since my goal (wish) is to - some day, somehow - integrate all of my electronic devices into one unit (car stereo, navigation, car diagnostics, etc. - you know the old "carputer" concept), it seems as if the Android format will allow for flexibility the ipad won't....or at least it seems like it'll be easier.

Google Nexus and Samsung Galaxy tablets seem to be highly-rated.

Comments?

Damn the solid mounts are high compared to the flexible.

Which is why I bought the flexible :)

I bought a pro clip side console mount before big bend and zip tied the flexible ram mount to it but it still wasn't solid.

I'm gonna bite the bullet and get a solid arm before the next trip. Amazon has them slightly cheaper.

Nexus is sold by google. Not the cheapest units but their marketing concept is no bloatware and first devices to receive the new OS releases. Always the most cutting edge updates.

Samsung makes great stuff too and may be a little cheaper. Samsung sells Apple their iPhone parts and the two are always suing each other.

3rd option is ASUS.

Pick the tablet with the most RAM (preferably 3GB) and screen size you can afford.

Upgraded to the full size iPad for the 100. Should be a big visibility improvement over the mini when on the trail.

Yes. Had to swap out the cradle up top though, to accommodate the larger ipad.

Will see if the added weight stresses that flex arm out too much, will go to the rigid mount if so.

Which Tablet? Since all your other stuff is apple i'd stay with IPad. Size 100% up to you, i just got tired of leaning over to look at the map while in Big Bend.

The map application for Droid that David uses IS better IMO.

I know the rigid mount is way more expensive, but IMO it's probably worth it. And more than likely necessary on the IPad Pro. Messed with one of those the other day, they are LARGE. And heavy.

No idea which cradle you will need for the Pro, they may not have them yet. May have to get one of their generic (by size) cradles.

Can you reinforce the flex mount by sliding a tube over the flexy part? In other words, can the flex mount be disassembled with common tools enough to make modifications?

[edit] Looked it up. I think you can disassemble at the ends and slide a rigid piece of alum or steel or even PVC, paint it black.

Yes, that can be done, BUT you need it to flex in the 100. Without some bend and angle put in it, it's too far away from the driver to be safe IMO. If you look in the pic i posted above i added a cell phone mount that clips onto the side of the console right beside the vertical flex bar, then ziptied the bar to it. That helped a lot on the mini, but it's pretty wobbly on the full size ipad.
