I was at Costco today and they said they wouldn't mount the 33 inchers on a vehicle unless it was "legally" ok to do so. They would put them on the supplied rims but not the truck, unless the tires were appropriate for the intended vehicle. In their computer, they could not find 1981 Landcruiser. My question is this: I have a BJ42 and do not have a vehicle manual. According to the manual or sticker on the drivers door; are 33" tires ok? Just trying to avoid an extra step in the future. Also would you guys recommend getting the heavier rated tires or are the regular rated ones ok? I was looking at BFG A/T KO's! An extra $30, I believe, for the "D" rated tires (the heavier ones).
thanks,

Some tire shops are reluctant to do that. I've also encountered that when I wanted to go bigger than stock. They said that the stock rims are too narrow for 10.5" wide tires.

Your lucky they will even mount them on the rims, guy in Grande Prairie, wouldn't even mount them on my rims when I asked, he said the 17in 33's (for my Dodge) are not for any truck. I guess I could have tried harder, but I was there for only a day, and I think it didn't help it was the first snow fall of the year and they were real busy, so he didn't even want to hear anything.
Cheers,
Deny

I think most Costcos have a policy of mounting only what the factory calls for the OEM size for your vehicle. Something about legal liability should anything happen. But, as a few have already mentioned, it depends on who's working and is willing to do what. Best off to just bring in rims if possible or go to a tire shop that has no such policies. I know that Abbsry tires never do...love them or hate them.

I'd go with D rating too...real truck tires with better sidewalls.

Thanks Guys. I guess if you don't succeed at one store, then try another. I appreciate the answers. Take care!
