Looking to do some serious mods on the suspension under my 76 FJ40. I've owned the truck for years- a spring over conversion and a lot of other work was done by Iron Pig Offroad about 18 years ago for the previous owner. I bought the truck from the PO, a friend of mine, and it's been a great truck for me. Now that I'm getting older it's getting harder to get up into such a high truck; for that and other reasons I am seriously considering going back to spring under configuration. I still want the truck to be and look lifted but want better springs than I now have. Current springs are pretty flat- I've had the rears re-arched but before they long they settled back in their flat look. I'm figuring going spring under with OME medium springs will drop the height 2-4 inches. Besides the obvious things that need to be done to make this change I have several questions.
IPOR installed FJ60 axles and extended the wheelbase to 96 inches (I believe original WB is 90"). I want to keep the existing long wheelbase to be able to retain the current driveshafts and also because the exhaust system has been slightly rerouted to exist comfortably with the extended WB.
Plan is to go with brand new springs and shocks for this job I have had great experience with OMU parts and may go with them. One of the things IPOR did was the use FJ55 rear springs- I am unsure whether they're in the front or the rear. Current center to center dimensions between spring hanger mounts (that is the dimension between eyes on each spring) is 46 inches in the rear and 42 1/2 inches in the front.
Can someone tell from these dimensions where the FJ55 springs are used, front or rear? I've had a lot of 40's and 55's through my garage over the years but couldn't tell the difference between a 55 spring and a 40 spring.
I love the truck have owned it for a long time and it's been good to me. Hopefully after this mod it'll be a better street vehicle- I'm not interested in wheeling it hard anymore she's just basically a grocery getter.
