Controls on Steering Wheel / Column? (1 Viewer)

Those PVS Automotive wheels all look terribly out of place in an 80 IMO.

Can't see myself dropping $1k on a wheel with buttons.
Although, if i got fired up, I could spend that on bits and pieces to cobble something together and make a project work! Wouldn't be the first time
$1k? Seems on the low side--which wheel were YOU looking at? :)

Mehhh this option is starting to look messy...

"If you are running an aftermarket branded headunit, you will find the right side of the steering controls do not function. Unlike our headunits which are designed to work with all controls on the steering wheel, aftermarket headunits do not recognise the right side due to the steering wheel being a retro fit from a vehicle that uses these buttons for cruise control..."

"Why is the headunit fan loud?
Our headunits operate like computers and require cooling. Unfortunately, the fan speed cannot be compromised due to this."

>The head units seem to start at $1700, and if they stop making them and yours fails, you just lost half your controls. That's to say you like their unit to begin with. Damn.

Maybe back to Plan DIY?

Good ole non airbag 3-spoke vinyl going in my 95’ Ute build. It is new so should last the rest of my life.

rgajr over at clublexus did this years ago (on gs300) and it's impressive and worth a read. lots of good info there. all credit to rgajr.
started this on the sc400 but since it's incredibly tight quarters in the sc400 and there are always bigger fish to fry, have postponed (procrastinated?). also the pioneer will eventually come out of the sc400 & go into the lx anyway (has rear channel audio/video so would make more sense in the lx).
steering wheel w remote controller is in sc400 and sourced a wheel for the lx450
to go this route, depending on what airbag you have, you may or may not need the airbag sub-harness adapter. i needed the same adapter for both the sc400 and lx450. you will also want to check donor vin for airbag safety recall.
sourced bunch of resistors but plan to use axxess adapter kit (picked up both universal & toyota/lexus specific) to try to keep from hacking oem controller.
ideally the headunit should have remote control input.
not sure which wheel (black leather or wood) would look best in lx and originally wanted to use lexus/toyota phone controller but it's smaller size than later controller. so it's newer wheel over original (prefer original lx wheel but needs a wrap so thought well why not try different wheel)
cheers

Will take a look, thanks! Still, if going with another wheel, and considering all the trouble this seems to be, I'd want a LOT more controls than that. Just sayin'. Seems like this is one of those ideas that SEEMS simple--Hey, let's put some buttons on the wheel to control sh*t!--and is anything but.

yea i prefer simple too - but hardly anything is anymore
still, i think it's ok to expand our knowledge base
should add that the clockspring needs to be capable of handing off signal
and column wiring needs to exist for this to be workable
minor details 😑
cheers

I did that myself with my 80 last year. Expensive, but one of the best purchases I've done for the 80, no regrets. It's the single most important control in the vehicle, and apart for the foam in the drivers seat (which I also replaced) the part of it you'll have the most contact with. The feel of a new wheel is wonderful. I also replaced the knob on the gearstick, but that one was a cheaper affair!

Hell my tow rig has steering wheel controls in 7 years of ownership I have never used them. 😂
I guess that's how you know you're old.
