I am losing patience with the well worn H motor in my 1980 Troopy. Kids on bicycles pass me going up the slightest hill. Repair parts are unavailable and I want more power. First choice was a 12HT but I can't locate one. Second choice was the 1HDFT and I may go with that if I can find one at a reasonable price. I have been offered a 1HDFTE but the ECM and wiring are missing. Should I consider the 1HDFTE and what would be involved in making it work? Will it run without the electronic? Can I swap in an injection pump from a 1HDFT? Any comments would be appreciated.

Buy a new 1HD-T. An ECU controlled engine will of course not run without electronics, and swapping all that into an old mechanical car will firstly be a huge task, and secondly IMO would ruin it. Not sure on getting a mechanical pump on an FTE, but where are you getting a 1HD-FT pump from?

If you have a custom harness made, it took me about a week to get mine running and driving. I went from a 1FZFE LX450 to a 1HDFTE. Which from the harness builder, they say is the most complicated. But it was basicslly plug and play for me with all the electronics.

Id suggest finding an entire parts rig, versus piecing one together. Unless you have a huge budget, then you could probably piece it together.

Watching this thread. My 2uz in my ‘01 lx470 just blew a spark plug out of the head. I’ve always wanted a 1hd-fte with a manual transmission… now is maybe my chance!

Haven't seen any 2uz to 1hdfte swaps, I havent searched much either!

I mean, that spark plug thread repair is pretty easy but it would be a cool swap if you need an excuse. should be a little easier then a 80 series.

Oh and converting an FTE to an FT is not plug and play and requires getting parts that are no longer available new from Toyota.

Cheers

Buy the FTE and convert the pump to full manual operation.
Have you done this? There won't be many pieces left from an FTE pump if you 'convert' it to manual. And where are you getting those pieces from?

That is like taking a fuel injected modern day v8 ie LS3 and putting a carb on it.

Makes no sense at all to me.

Just find an FT.

Cheers

Totally agree its a backwards step, I'd never do it, loose all the benefits of a FTE.

No I have not, quite popular in Australia, there are a few companies that sell the changeover parts.

its an ih8electronics thing... i get it, i bought a mechanical diesel for a reason, but id never buy one i had to swap back to mech if i had the choice

i do like screwdriver tuning

I am building a couple of FTE 79’s but I’m also building a mechanical FTE just because I want to see the different ways to do it (FT timing case/pump, Yanmar 6LPA pump and case, converted FTE pump and case). These guys in Australia sell everything you need to do it. Including a mechanically converted pump.

very cool, will you be detailing this on here?

Interesting kit. Is there much to gain from a mechanised FTE vs a standard FT, or is it more to get around the scarcity of the FT and associated parts?

its for lessening the perceived electrical failure issue, whether thats valid or not

It’s really just for curiosity’s sake. The PDS diesel guys say they could easily make 250 hp on a safe pump tune. Who wouldn’t want that in a 24 valve mechanical turbo diesel?

And I obviously see the value of an electrically controlled FTE as I’m building two of them, and I don’t have a problem running those in any conditions.

I ended up with an FTE long block, no pump or turbo. I found a really good deal on a 315 hp Yanmar 6LPA injection pump and I just wanted to figure out how to make all the timing cases, injection pump gears, and injection pumps play well together.

And yes, I will document it at some point once I start to figure something out.
