Hello all, Im considering buying a 93 v-6 pickup. I just sold my 87 r22 and truck was ok. Alot of people state you cant kill a 22r, but I did have alot of valve train noise, oil leaks, and burnt little oil, but that was only mine. Im a little leary about the v-6. Does anyone have any input on how good the engine and trany is. There's one for sale in NC, and I will have to drive from atlanta to get it, but someone gave me a realy bad comment about the v-6. Said his threw a rod after a new rebuilt, and was a crap engine. I have read some comments about the head gaskets going bad.
Before I invest the $, and find out myself, the hard way, wanted to see your comments first. She jacked up though, 8 lift and 7 body lift with 35. No pumpkin gearing done, so I think I will need to do that. Thanks for feeback.

If the HG has not been done yet there is a strong possibility it is needed. Aside from whatever the engine needs that lift is pretty high, especially if it is still IFS. Going that big can make for awkward handling and mechanical issues. My stock gears don't let me go slow enough with 33's, gears would be a good idea if you get it and keep the 35's. Good luck dude!

It's really not that bad of an engine, IMO. The ex's '94 has 225K on it now, still doing fine. My old '92 4Runner has 250K on it now, no issues. But, both engines got the HGs replaced by Toyota for free.

Get the VIN, call a dealer, they can tell you if it's ever been done, and if they would cover it if it hasn't been. At this age, continued covereage under the old SSC is unlikely.

Complaints about this engine:

* it is a BITCH to work on. Changing the sparkplugs can just piss you off, especially #5 on the pass side.

* not a lot of power for the complexity and weight. A properly tuned 22RTE turbo truck will kick it's ass.

* IMO the coolant system is poorly designed. I don't like how the thermostat is on the discharge side of the engine, on the output of the water pump.

* the exhaust crossover pipe can sometimes develop leaks at the manifolds, and it really tends to shed a lot of heat into the cab.

Thats all :hillbilly: fab, there is no after market for that sh**

Rode hard put up...(I would pass or pay skrap)

Which tranny?

V6 is HIGHLY complicated compared to 22, and read below

A little PM would have done your old 22 some good.

Yup, as I like to say that engine has been sewn in, absolute pain
spark plugs are,,,,:mad::mad::mad::mad: as KLF said, and simple alternator, belts, basic PM stuff is a chore there are watter bypass hoses on the back of the engine ;) the engine is as far from the fire wall as your hand is wide, I love mine all 8.5mpg's (right now, injector O-ring bad)

Pretty good idea is to snag a 3 core if yours doesn't have it it is fickle and on a fine line if a hose bursts watter, gets low you better be paying attention.

HIGHLY RESTRICTIVE, and if out do headers, re seal and gasket the works impossible or at least wayyyyy harder than if engine is out and your garage wall is the next closest inner fender from you....and simple alternator, belts, basic PM stuff is a chore there are watter bypass hoses on the back of the engine ;) the engine is as far from the fire wall as your hand is wide, I love mine all 8.5mpg's (right now, injector O-ring bad)

Excellent post.

Great motor but you must think ahead

A thrown rod is not an issue with this engine, sure it happens if abused, or built improperly.... But that's a problem with any engine.

Up sides, decent power and torque, and good long life spane if taken care of...

Down side, poor mileage, about 16-18 on a stock vehicle, headgasket issues, and no room to work any anything, unless you get a wile hair to clean the top of the intake.....

I'd run screaming from that lift though, unless he has reciepts from a very reputable shop for all the custom work done.

thanks all for your advise. Think I'll have to pass on her. I have a pick of it here, dont know if I posted it correctly or not. He wants 7900 which may be high. Anyhow, Im sure glad we have this discusion sight. Probably saved me alot of trouble, thanks to all your input, much appriciated

Stock

find a stock and unmolested unit, mine got 210k still running strong.:)

Price kinda HIGH! Little high in the rear also? basically is it worth that much to YOU? I have a 93 w/236K on it stock and it had Head Gasket and steering control rod recalls done and it runs fine if ya don't try to put Bosch plugs in it!!:o Denso's made it run much better! Putting hopefully last set of tires on it this weekend, doing the Michelin LTX AT2's 31x10.50x15's and hope they will last cause the wrangler's sure don't!! Nothing more than Scheduled Maintenance since i bought it whith 140K on it. I replaced Timing Belt, and all associated parts & seals & V belts, tensioners, idlers, starter, battery, and that is about it!
