Computer Problems with Manual Trans Swap

I guess the real question is, when did ODBII become used in 80's that had MTs? Or more importantly, was there ever a manual FZJ80 that was ODBII compliant, and in my case had ABS as well?

Have you tried getting a 5spd ECU out of AUS or Europe?
General Market EPC shows
89661-60340 for 95/01 up Computer, Engine Control FZJ80 LHD 5F EFI
Japan Market EPC shows
89661-60300 for 95/01 up Computer, Engine Control FZJ80 MTM (RHD)
More than likely the only difference between LHD and RHD ECU is mounting brackets.

You will need General Market EWD 232F if you want to cross reference the differences between ATM and MTM and understand how they relate to the Engine ECU.

May the force be with you.

Bringing this one to the top, can anyone help me get the pinouts for the ECU for a South American 96 ECU that is MT with ABS? I will also be needing the pinouts for a US spec 96.

I'll be pretty close to doing this swap if I can get to the point of testing this out. I can do a very quick test with a relay harness once I can check out this pinouts and swapping the ECU without touching the transmission and just see if it starts and idles and feeds OBDII information.

I can get the part number of the ECU tonight if that helps.

Thanks be to MUD!

Better late than never, pictures of the ECU. Can anyone help with a pinout for this ECU? A pinout for a 1996 US ECU?

Thank you!!

Ok, I've gotten the EWD for the US spec 96 cruiser. Its going to take a little research to get labeled correctly, but no big deal.

As for the Central America ECU I've got, it appears it is for the ABS system. Whoops. So it seems the part number I'm looking for is 89661‑60340 and again the engine control portion of the FSM that goes with that vehicle. The link to the ToyoDIY page is

Anybody throw me a bone on that one? Bueller?

Ya.. probably not of any value. In my experience swapping 80s to diesel ATM and 5spd.. the ABS system is not a factor.

Bump from the past!

What ever happened to this project and what was the solution for this ECU issue?

I'm interested b/c I am prepping for a H151 swap in a 97 and need to know if I have to source another ECU.

Thanks,
M

I'm interested to hear how you got on; I have a manual diesel for breaking (rotten chassis) and a good auto petrol with a blown head, trying to work out the best plan. So many options. :hhmm:

It is kind of a juicy dream. The 80 is the first auto transmission vehicle I've ever owned -- except that half-interest in my bro's used '74 Vega with that 2-speed slushbox. Less said about that, the better.:p

Only necessity of getting around drove me to that.:crybaby:
And that was 1976. It was a very poor investment.

Needless to say, until someone posts the parts list and FAQ for this, I'll count on the auto I have over the manual I don't.
:D
At least in our 80.

I have all the parts but not the money...
4.2 L 1HD diesel turbo 5-speed manual
4.5 L I6 1FZ petrol 4-speed automatic

Any updates on this project?

I am in the preparation phase of the swap for my 94 DD 1HD-T.

Here are a few pics of the used tranny I found.

Africa81

has anyone changed from manual to auto transmission on 81 series diesel?

Would like some details on this.

Dual function stick, cool.

I got my Toyota 1HD-T Clutch, PP etc from the USA Toyota Dealer.
Shifters, knob, console, boots, Clutch pedal, Master and Slave, lines, hoses, brackets all new parts from Dave at Japan 4x4.
You need Toyota EPC to go down this road.

Pic of my US spec 97 FZJ with new manual shift stuff swapped in.

Sheldon,

What is the part number for the 5 speed shifter knob?

What is the ball park cost for this type of modification? I just got my first LC recently and it drove me nuts that I couldn't get a 5 speed.

All new parts from Toyota around $6k. Used parts who knows; it is different for everybody depending on availability and cost of used parts?
My is under $2k

I will post a write-up of my auto to 5 speed conversion here soon.

I may be spending a chunk of my upcoming deployment in a friendly Arab nation where this combination is available. Very tempting if I could source used stuff and ship semi reasonably. Ill have to dig through all these posts and see exactly what parts are required. The small stuff I I would be able to ship home USPS in a tough box, maybe even the transfer case. The transmission itself though? probably not.
