I have a bad ignitor in my 1980 4x4. I have an '81 parts truck with a different style coil and ignitor. The pick up plug to the distributor is the same and hooks up to the 20r distributor. The three wires to/from the coil are the same colors, tan, yellow and black (which I assume are supply, ground and tach?). The connectors on the end of said wires are different...

If I swap connectors to the appropriate wires will the '81 coil/ignitor work on my '80?

Good to hear. Sometimes you need to step out in virgin territory and take the risk.

I hooked it up with some jumper wires before fully commiting and hacking off the plugs and sure enough it worked fine. There are the same three wires in the same colors going in one end and the same wires and plug going to the distributor so it made sense.

The truck idles so much better than it did before so I guess that peice has been going south on my for a while.

What really convinced me it would probably work was some guys on the pirate faq that were swaping over to cheesed together GM peices and making it work to save $$ vs. buying new Toyota ignitors. I figured if the wrong brand would work, surely the wrong year of the right part would work even better. I did really try to make my splices nice though!
