I was inspired by the old Russian 4x4 van in the new movie "Chernobyl Diaries." I really liked how one could access the engine (and drive train, I presume) from inside the vehicle.

Because nothing like that is currently available in the US, I thought one could be built.

I was thinking about starting with a VW Van chassis and modifying it to work on top of a Toyota pickup drive train (22R, W56, t-case and axles). To fit it, one would need to build a tunnel with hatches that open through the middle of the vehicle to fit the drive train and gain access to it.

Has something like this been done? Is it practical? What do you guys think? What other chassis might work?

It would be fairly cheap too - you just need to acquire a non-running chassis and Toyota drive train then invest the time and effort to do all the fabrication.

^^^ That's pretty cool and it makes wanna build one. I say go for it!

You can import those UAZ vans into the U.S. Those vans are also like 3-4 grand minus the shipping and import cost.

Why dont you start with a mitsubishi delica , or a toyota hiace , these are already 4wd and diesel

Your Idea sound cool though, I do like VW vans!

Or you can just buy a UAZ cheep like borsht
