Its a little harder to change on the trail. Plenty of people still run stock shafts, and I decided to upgrade only after the third birf blew. When they blew it always destroyed a turnion bearing or two, ruined inner axle seals and now the inside of my knuckle is all banged up. With Long's you have to get thier hub gear to be warranted which is the next weak link, followed by ring n pinion, t case out put, etc... If you have the money to invest now it may save a fun weekend down the road.

Dad brought up an interesting point.

IT seems the weak link in the drive train is ment to be the Birf...

If I go with the longfields, what is the weak link then...?

Just wondering, is it better to keep this as my weaklink.

It's maybe a 40min job to remove... Supper easy...

Just don't wanna upgrade this, then I start exploding my lockers, or some other unfortunate thing.. :D

Thanks
Cody

what causes birf de feet ? :D

#1 miles 150K+

#2 way larger tyres

#3 hoppin on da rocks

#4 having the front wheels in a hard turn & gettinndown on the skinny pedal :bang:

doubt even Bobby Long`s will fair much better with the above recipe

then add worn axle bushing, knuckle bearing loose or worn wheel bearing allowing the bird to over flex oh and don`t forget the grease worms:grinpimp:

I don't know about Longs on the 62 series but if they are like the 80 series, here is what I have experienced.

I have exploded 2 stock birfs in my 80. I replaced them with Longs and they have never missed a beat. They are only good for about 20,000 miles so if your cruiser is your daily driver, you may want to consider this.

daum for the $$$ ya would have thunk BL`s would last a bit long-ger:D

not 2worry has hub locks:)

Thanks for the advise, but I think this has now left me even more split.

Ok so the next weekest link will now be my Warn Locking hubs. Is that cheeper weak link than Birfs.

I would immagine so.

Ok, So now yall say they're only good for 20,000 miles. When My hubs are unlocked, axles not turning, so DD won't matter. I'll only get "Miles" on the front when In 4x4.

Also, I'm gonna assume I've got 27 spline axles. Or being the LockRite Locker, Do I have 30 spline. I'm not gonna order till I go back, But I believe they are the stock birfs..

Maybe reread his post. He is not saying that the Longs are only good for 20K miles or that the stock shafts are only good for 20K miles.

It seems like the factory Toyota hubs are stronger than the Birfields "almost all the time".
The warn hubs are weaker than Factory Toyota hubs, but I still see the Birfield breaking before the hub.
I have seen countless people break the factory Birfield by simply backing up a hill or ditch with the wheel turned and all the weight on the front axle. The factory locking hub survied . Sorry but I have never wheeled with a Toyota that had under a 100K miles on it neither. I'm sure that played a part in the breakage of the stock shafts. ( alot of factors are in play when you break,)

If you are worried about the front axle like was stated when $$$ permits put some Longs and hub gears and be done with it. Nothing is 100% but the Long are the best on the market to reduce your chances of doing trail repairs.Untill then if the engine runs (check) 4wd drive works(check) brakes work (check) ... Lets go Wheeling :D

Woops...it is Long's inner axles that only last about 20,000 miles. I have those too, with about 7k on them so far.

Sorry for the confusion.

So Albert, Your saying to buy the LongFields and Hub gears, What are hub gears???

My Warn hubs are still in good shape.

Would you say to do the LongFields, and Chromoly axles? Or just LongFields??

Yall know more about this than me, and I don't wanna waste money, But I don't wanna have to tear this apart again soon, because I should have done something the frist go around..
Thanks
Cody

You can call Bobby Long and he will talk to you about all his products and maybe even help you decide if you should just upgrade your birfields or all of the axle shaft parts.

did you get some new rubber for the FJ62 ? Or are you running the 33"s still?

A guy on La4x4 was selling some 31 procomp Xterrains, Same type as my 33's.

So we bought that for 400.

Technically the cruiser only has 2 wheels right now, but It still has the 33s on the rims.

Why?

Got some.

Thanks
Cody

Nope, just remembered you talking about getting some new tires and was curious if you liked them or not. That,s all.

Well, I've got Longfields, Chromoy's, and the axle rebuild kit from Marken crawler on the way..
Thanks
Cody

Ok, so after a couple days waiting.

Then a couple interuptions over the past week,

And Many phone calls to Mr. Paul.

And 1 Socket borrowed, from Mr. Paul. BTW Did I say Thanks :D

It's back together. Yeahhh.

I'm thinking it took about 12-16 hours, not counting the time spent driving, and the time thinking what's next.

Thanks
Cody

So, which do yall rather...

Scan_Pic0004.jpg

All will have the "red" cable running from guard, to roof rack, and All will have the Roof Light Protector, Just need to figure out which to build.

I'm also open to ideas.

I'm going to bring all of them up and around fenders to sliders, which i've tried to show on a couple.

Some I did just a front view, some I tried to give it the same slant that the truck is shown at.. :D

Thanks
Cody
