Good morning. As I push forward on my build getting some shocks on the rig seems like a good idea. Most of my prior experience has been with sports cars, so figuring out which shocks doesn't include account for a lifted body. Ha.

This '68 has a shackle lift kit on it but I've removed the body lift. I know cheap generally results in you getting what you pay for, and Bilsteins are well regarded. This rig will be mostly road / fire road use.

Any coaching to pass along on how to account for the lift and brands of shocks?

Thanks!

X10 on Bilstein
I’m running Rancho 5000 on the 40, and wouldn’t recommend them to anyone... have Bilsteins on my ‘Van’, 6k on the rear duallies, 3k on the front axle... if they can smooth its ride and improve its handling, an Fj40 or 40 will be nothing.

I had 5100s in my FJ Cruiser, the rear ones leaked after one year.

Now I have driven with FOX shocks, no problems, no complains.

I have had bilstein 5100s on my firstgen 4runner, fj80, and now fj40... They are very well priced and perform very well

Thank you-it honestly had not occurred to me to even look to see if I had swaybars.

I wanted to follow up with something that I just learned courtesy of the people here. The part numbers I listed earlier in this thread are for mid70s and later rigs.

Apparently the earlier models had a different location for the shock mount and the parts I listed may be too long. If I find out any more information I will post it, I just wanted to make sure that anyone looking at this in the future doesn’t get tripped up.

Looking to buy some new shocks too, how do these compare to Old Man Emu shocks. Also are these part numbers confirmed? I believe my FJ40 has a 2" lift but when I googled "Bilstein shocks FJ40 2 inch lift" I saw a part number that was more like the 4" ones listed here.

Hi. These are the ones I just installed. You need to do some measurements before ordering, just because they fit my rig does NOT mean they will work for yours.

Look up the Bilstein offroad shock catalog - it lists compressed / extended lengths etc, super helpful.

I don’t know how these compare to those shocks, everybody here seems to think the Bilsteins are high-quality so I just went with that.
