I will be putting a new clutch in the 45 soon and I want to know if i need to remove the tranny hump to do it.

I seem to remember needing to do it several years ago when I swapped the TC. I am thinking I did something wrong that time and need to know the trick. Do I need to dial the TC around for it to clear the tranny output shaft?

Do I need to take the TC off at all, maybe just take tranny and TC out as one?

What say ye that have done this before?

Fine...don't answer my question.

So I got up off my lazy ass and checked the FSM, it doesn't say anything about removing the tranny hump and does say to remove the tranny and TC as a unit.

So there.:flipoff2:

If you have a floor shifter it would be easier with the hump out the way. With the shifter off the top of the transmission will still stick out of the hump making it harder to slide the transmission back, even harder to reinstall. Plus with hump off it possible to support the transmission/tranfer from above. Removing the hump isn't easy but it might be worth doing in the long run.

What I do is take out the seats and tranny hump. Roll the windows down slide a 4x4 through the open windows and support it on the doors. Then secure whatever lift system you choose to it. I then have a floor jack or two underneath the tranny/ transfer case. Having the two lift systems keeps the tranny transfer from fallling off the jack.

I have a small motorcycle stand that will support the tranny/TC once it is disconnected. It is flat and I will shim the combo with wood to keep it level while I lower it. With that I probably won't need the 2x4 and rope.

It's snowing up here this weekend so it will have to wait.

I usually just remove the bell-housing mount bolt, remove the rubber pucks and drop the whole unit down.
You gain about an inch. I find that more than enough room to remove the tranny / tcase.
Have yet to remove the tranny hump in over 10 clutch swaps in various FJ40s.

Well, I did the clutch this weekend.

I got the tranny/TC combo out without removing the hump, although it was a squeeze and I had gravity on my side. I did notice that the FSM showed pictures of a hump that has an access plate on the top, so that if you took that off you had a larger. Mine just had the small holes for the shifters.

I could not get the tranny/TC back in without removing the hump though.

My motorcycle lift blew a seal and stopped lifting so I had to put a 2x6 across the two doors and use a ratchet strap to reinstall. Probably the best thing anyway, as it allowed me to be able to jiggle the unit to finally seat the shaft in the pilot bearing.

I also found that my floor is getting a little like swiss cheese. Guess I'll have to hone my welding skills and get at it.
