I apologize if this issue is addressed elsewhere; I didn't see it.

My truck has a 1985 Toyota pickup body and a solid front axle. Today I put it in 4wd because there was some snow on the road. On the way home I noticed it jerking regularly as I was driving It grew more jerky and made more noise - a regular clunk-clunk-clunk - as I kept going. The slower I went, the worse it seemed. I stopped and took it out of 4wd and unlocked the hubs, but it didn't help.

I've never had any issues with the drivetrain, but I did overhaul the driver's side wheel last year (haven't gotten around to doing the passenger side, though I did put a manual locking hub on it - yeah, it came with auto lockers. Don't ask me why). It's been going fine since the overhaul.

I've read some things about warped drive shafts and whatnot, but this problem came on very suddenly, so I don't see how that could be it. I haven't been off road with it in over a year. I use it mainly to drop my son off at school on my way to work, plus the occasional beer run. I've only had it in 4wd about 3 times since the overhaul, and it's been fine, but a couple of times I've had difficulty unlocking a hub and taking it out of 4wd. I back up an inch or two and try again, and it works. The clunking and jerking is brand new.

I welcome any ideas.

Thanks,

Sean

Sounded like the wheel.

Pull the hub face off to make sure the hubs are unlocked and see what happens. If the problem goes away with the hub faces removed It is probably the birf or diff, probably a birf of it sounds like it is coming from the wheel. :meh:

Thanks guys. Turns out the wheel spacer on that side was loose and busted one of the studs. Pulled the rotor off and replaced all the studs. Problem solved.
