Hello, i am new to this forum. I need help/advise where to look for this Clicking/ticking noise. I brought it to dealer 3 times and they coulnt pin point where the noise is coming from. I am waiting for an appointment for a "master" technician to come and look at it (sent from Corporate). I could hear the noise when my front windows are down at lower speed and low throttle. No clicking/ticking sound at iddle, in park. It only occurs after the engine is warmed up. it is noticeable from a stop and accelerating up through 20-30mph between 1000 - 2500 RPM.

Sorry you're having issues on a new truck. Can you put some time stamps when it is happening in this video? I had a hard time determining what you're referencing. I think not having a visual reference kind of made it a little harder too. Where were you recording this from?

the ticking/clicking im referring: example at the 15 second mark and 28 second. I apology for the video. I did not have a gopro so what i did i taped up my cellphone to the side steps of the truck. I tried holding the phone with the windows down but the wind was interfering with the sound.

Thanks for the clarifying but that is really hard to diagnose. Just sounds like some light ticking but doesn't sound like any sound I'm familiar with since it seems to be when you are accelerating. When I hear ticking or clicking, I think lifters or CV joints but that isn't what this is.

From what you wrote, at least you're able to get Lexus to acknowledge the noise is there.
Seems so often that something like that will never manifest itself when a dealer tech is looking at it.

Hi, any solution found for this ? Im experiencing the same for 2023 GX460 1000 miles only?

Same exact sound on my '23 GX460 with 6k miles. Noticed it after changing oil. From my brief searching, it appears to be from the valve train not being fully lubricated after oil changes?

That noise is from inside the oil filter housing ! I know this because I do my own oil changes and if you get the filter just a little off it will make noise for days after the oil change until it somehow corrects its seating. Now when I change my oil I carefully inspect the filter housing and make sure everything lines up before screwing on tight.

The noise is very evident on acceleration after oil changes if filter if pressing down on the spring in the housing which is what makes that tapping sound.

Hello, I came across this thread while researching this noise and felt it's my duty to add another data point for others in the future. The ticking mine makes sounds exactly the same as the ticking in OP's video.

Summary:
  • First 5k spent as a loaner
  • Purchased at 5k, changed oil. Vehicle is only fed 91 octane from this point onward.
  • First noticed this noise sometime between 5-10k. Only happens when vehicle is at operating temp, between 1200-1500 RPM. Noise remains until vehicle is turned off
  • Oil changed at 10k, noise went away after a few weeks
  • Oil changed at 15k, noise returned. Drove for a few weeks and noise will not go away
  • Attempted to have Lexus diagnose. They could not hear the noise
  • Oil changed again a few hundred miles later (going crazy at this point, figured why not)
  • Noise became more excessive immediately. Took it to Lexus again, and this time they confirmed the noise
  • Noise isolated to cylinder 8. Spark knock pre-ignition. Excessive carbon build up on cylinder 8, and 1 & 2 to a lesser extent
  • Recommended a carbon clean. Not covered under warranty. $500
  • Ran carbon clean. Ticking noise is now gone
  • Drove all night with windows down trying to hear it; appears to be gone.

Lexus diagnosis video:

I'm really tired of this noise and I wanted it gone so I coughed up the ransom fee. They mentioned nothing about the oil or the oil filter.

Oh man, that sux. If you’re running 91 exclusively that should have been covered. Carbon build up is only likely from bad timing/spark, dirty fuel or running low octane.

Im guessing loaner drivers don’t care quite as much about what flavor they throw in it before returning it…

Found this thread after hearing the same sound on my 2023 GX. Happened immediately after an oil change, and I hadn't heard it before that. I initially thought it could be a loose skid plate...removed the skid and had the same noise. Only happens upon acceleration, so no ticking if I'm coasting. Vehicle's a 2023 GX460 with 19K miles, exclusively running 91 octane.

Did anyone confirm if it's cylinder spark knock or the oil housing spring mentioned by @thomkat ?

@watchedandjudged has the noise come back since the carbon cleaning?

Ticking for a few days after an oil change is pretty common, especially for engines with large oil galleys (6.7 Powerstroke/6.7 Cummins) or engine with variable cam phasers.

Maybe it’s the Jiffy Lube dudes 12mm rolling around on your cross member : ) At 19k, the dealer would fix for free if they can find it…

Is it a lifter sound? Sure they used 0-w20? If it persists you could keep the filter and just change the oil again to be sure. Thats only a $30 risk.

Hi all, I am new on this forum. I've had a 2013 gx460 Premium for the last 3 years and love the car..It is at 130k miles at this point. Took it all the way from CA to Anchorage and back last summer and it did great.
Last week i discovered the same exact metallic rattling noise just like GX23ADR described and posted a video of. Metallic rattle during moderate acceleration only in low RPMS and then goes away. If I press the pedal gradually , it s not there. It happens if the car is in park or moving.

I am loosing my mind trying to figure out what it is , and all the threads on the web don't lead to final answers..people just abandon the conversations. Ive checked the shields , etc. Not it.

Did anyone ever figure out what the hell causes this tremble/rattle???
@GX23ADR , if you are still on here, can you please post your findings, I'd greatly appreciate that!!!

Any suggestions form your dealer/independent mechanics?

My dealership is a stealership. Found out a hard way...long story. But I took it to an independent mechanic for a quick check to see where the sound is coming from and they said that the sound is most pronounced by the oil pan...using statoscope. This is as much as they were willing to dig for a $150..the rest of the diagnostics would cost $600 and they could not guarantee any findings. I started searching online as I thought that someone might have experienced the same issue, and sure enough - plenty of threads, but I can't seem to find the final answers. I did change oil 2 weeks ago and I thought I did everything right, as usual. I dont know if the sound was there or not prior to the oil change. I am a light footed driver, so it just happened that on the hot day last week I drove by the concrete wall with windows opened and heard it. It was a race since then ). You practically cant hear with windows closed ..but it is there, just like in GX23ADR 's video.
