stormy day in rural Ontario so dream mode is kicking in:

a few months back i got the idea i wanted to ditch the wife's JDM RVR for a Land Cruiser winter DD.
but she loves the RVR so that idea went south ... with a ROAR ."leave my RVR alone, i like it" ... end of conversation.
so now i have a 1986 BJ70 sitting here with 650,000 km.
i also have aquired:
donor frame
donor 3B/H55/split
front 24 e/locker complete axle
rear low km SF axle which will get a AussiLock
used 8274 with syn rope
new windshield
and a crap load of other parts

i want to do a really cheap refurb. the previous owner did the bodywork. not perfect but far from ugly. VERY solid.
the original engine is 420 across the board but the injection system has been neglected so it runs ... poorly
the H55 5th gear is shot but new in box 5th gear assembly was included in the purchase.
the truck came with "like new" ice radials mounted on really rusty rims which were swapped onto a set of acceptable chrome rims.
the frame is shot so the donor will be "renewed" and that will be the base i will build off.
the donor 3B and H55 will be renewed and installed.
not sure about a turbo yet since i want it done cheap.
the 24V e/locker front is in really good shape so a check over and it should be ready to install.
the rear is a straight bolt in and the aussi lock will be installed before installation of the diff ... easier.
the leafs on the donor rig are in really good shape so tear apart, sand blast and coat and slip plate and reinstall. no lift at this time. cheap.
all brake lines and fuel lines need to be replaced.
new fuel tank sitting on the shelf will be installed
seats will be ditched for side mount rear and renewed celica seats up front.
the floor of the truck will be sand blasted and primed and repainted.
hell, i might as well glass bead the entire interior metal and give it a new lease on life.

i don't know what color yet. yellow? red to match the rag top? dune beige? the green of the HZJ40 build? no idea yet.

everything will be color of choice or flat black. no chrome.

anyway, this won't be till after the BJ70 ragtop mods are complete and the troopie is finished.

the interior is shot
i have a couple choices, i can replace the side and interior panels with aluminum or i can use the replacements i have sitting in storage.
i "think" i have a replacement dash pad.
better than i thought with a 600,000 Km vehicle

more pics, the upper firewall under the windshield has me concerned.
i paid $1600 for the truck and hauled it back.
i paid $1800 for the donor rig and hauled it back.
sold the LHD parts off the donor rig for $750. which barely covered the hours taken to strip and cut the firewall out.
but i ended up with a 3B with new head and 425 compression. one owner (from 6 months old) well looked after mech drivetrain and fairly solid donor frame for $1050.
the front diff cost me $550.
the rear diff i had sitting here
the winch cost me $450
new windshield was $50

so, at this point i have $3800 invested, no hours.

i want to have the completed rig done for under $10K and good for at least a decade of driving.

time will tell how far off i am.

just a lot ... that part has me a bit concerned, well, quite concerned.
i do have a donor 70 body that is rust free in that area so if need be. i can cut and weld in replacement.
before i go too far the windshield and dash will need to be removed for inspection.

Hi all,

Sounds like a great project Wayne! :)

I look forward to following this thread - I know you will do this rig right.

Regards,

Alan

talk to Akella 4X4, i believe that part is still available new.
cheers

Nice truck! Flat black gets my vote, or olive drab green, military style. If you end up pulling your interior door panels and want to sell them then maybe you can PM me? Thanks. Looking forward to more pics as you build this up.
