It's been too long since I changed the fluid, can get the drain plug out, and when I removed the fill plug fluid came running out there, how could it have been over filled? Any tricks to removing the drain plug?

Just make sure you open fill plug first to ensure you can fill it after you drain it.

Use a 1/2" drive 6-point 15/16" socket, fits a little more snugly on the stock 24mm drain plug heads, so there's less chance to round the corners of the plug. And grind the end of the socket flush so there's no recess - gets a better bite on the plug that way. Soak with PB Blaster, etc. ahead of time and use a long breaker bar to get things started.
