Changed serpentine belt and still slight squeal after cold start???

Is it cold where you are? Perhaps the accessory heater working the alternator harder than usual on a cold belt?

Different vehicle, but on my 100 series, it was the idler pulley that needed to be replaced when I experienced continuous chirping after replacing the belt. That was pretty easy to accomplish, but I needed to take the tension off the belt by manipulating the tensioner with a wrench and socket. HTH, haven't had to do this with my 200 yet.

Are you 100% certain it isn't the AIP? You said only on cold starts and the description of the sound and behavior is exactly that of the pump duty cycle. In addition, when the pulley goes, its a clicking/rattling sound. Not a squeal. I went through 2 of them on my 5.7 tundra.

what is AIP? Mine is just chirping and sounds like it's loose a little. I sprayed some PB Blaster on it and it's quiet now.

I had the same squeal at start up. It got louder and longer lasting. Dealer replaced the tensioner. 34k. miles Tundra forums have similar issue.

So frustrating........just had my mechanic bud change plugs & drive belt the other day...96K miles..2011 460

Cold start.....66* heated garage......belt squeals on cold start up.......then goes quiet normal....WTH ?

New Belt was OEM Toyota for $48.......Old belt was just fine just showed wear...new plugs work great ! :)

Any thoughts ? Have not sprayed anything on belt at all......

It is possible for stuff to build up in the grooves on the pulleys and make a fresh belt ride high.

The problem for you is really cleaning those grooves requires removing the belt again..

Personally I’d avoid belt dressing. It was appropriate on older v-belt systems but these shouldn’t need it.

Thx for the reply.......may be what I'll need to do....pull belt & clean pulley grooves........

How annoying that start up squeal is.........:frown:

I agree on it being annoying. In my case a new belt helped an occasional startup squeal.. 99% of the time anyway. I’ll soon be replacing the idler/tensioner/fan bearing bracket and cleaning the remaining grooves.

I’d suspect the alternator in your case, as that one sees decent torque after startup and actually has grooves. The fan also sees torque at first due to how our fan clutch works, but is driven by the back of the belt, so it should have a nice fresh surface to grip with. Probably worth looking at that surface as well.

i have a belt squeal as well, but it only happens when its warm and wet outside. Its loud enough that my wife is giving me grief for it. Luckily the cabin is so insulated I only hear it when the windows are down. FML.

I had a similar issue where when cold the belt would squeal on start up until it warmed up a bit. I switched it for an aftermarket belt and after a few weeks the squeal came back. I bit the bullet and bought the expensive Toyota belt and no more squeal. The Toyota belt appears to be a thicker better construction. It also has some felt like feel to it.

yes......the reason I went with the Toyota belt # 90916A2033 (made in USA as per pkg)

paid $48 at Bell Lexus in AZ...great online store BTW.......

hopefully the belt will seat/wear into the pulleys......or I'll go to plan B

Belt started squeaking badly this morning. Local Lexus dealer quoted me $375 for replacement.

I kindly said no thanks. I ordered $52 belt from LexusPartsNow to install myself. Seems fairly straightforward reviewing install on 5.7L Tundra forums,.

$375 ?

ouch.........

check out my link to Lexus parts @ Bell Lexus...

they seem less expensive than other on line stores & very prompt shipping
