Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some help diagnosing a change in the sound coming from under the hood after a recent beach trip (driving on sand and through some deep puddles).

Before the trip:
Everything sounded totally normal; smooth, consistent, and quiet. No abnormal noises

After the trip:
I’m noticing:
• Some 'chirpiness' that seems to be coming from the front of the engine
• A noticeable change in overall timbre to the engine/fan/belt sound. Sounded nice, low, and smooth before, but now is loud, raspy, and chirpy

Important notes:
• The truck still runs perfectly—no change in idle, power delivery, drivability, or engine temp.
• No warning lights.
• Happens cold and warm.
• Only change is the sound.

I’m wondering if water/sand exposure could have affected the fan clutch, belt tensioner, or bearings somewhere in the front accessory drive. Before I start throwing parts at it, I’d love to hear what common culprits might be after off-road/wet exposure like that—especially since performance hasn’t changed.

Any insight or specific things I should check (or simple tests to confirm fan clutch/bearing condition) would be really appreciated.

Thanks

You could also take the serpentine belt off and get your hands on each pulley and see if any feel gritty, too loose etc

And variance in voltage?
Alternator is low, and from what I understand doesn't like big deep puddles very much...

I will bet it's the fan bracket going out, if you are over 200k it's bound to happen.

Well I ended up being tight on time couldn't take care of it myself, so I took it to my usual shop and let my guy know what was up. Turns out both the idler and tensioner bearings were on their way out, IMO likely due to brackish water ingress from my recent beach trip. Replaced and threw on a new belt and we are good to go. Mystery solved
