center diff lock question

I was thinking the same thing. In fact, you're better off doing the opposite, and using a "start in 2nd" button if you've got one.

On an un-modified post '95 truck people will do that because it is the only way to get the center diff lock to lock and prevent wheel spin.

Having a CDL is particularly handy on the pre-95 tucks without a VC in the transfer. In those the CDL switch comes standard though, doesn't it?

91-92 have the CDL switch and no VC, 93+ have VC and no CDL switch (stock). 93-94 have no 2nd start switch.

Except for my '94... (repost)

I'm sure this has been covered, but if you engage the CDL in hi-range, does that mean you can activate your front and rear e-lockers in high, too?

My last truck had a DIY e-locker with a custom harness, therefore independent of everything else. I found rear locker in hi-range to be quite useful sometimes.

I added the CDL switch on my 80 and did the pin 7 mod at the same time. I like to be able to disengage the CDL in 4Low on the rocks when I am turning and there is ample traction to leep from binding the drivetrain.

ABS with CDL Locked

Is there a mod that will allow the option of keeping ABS enabled with the CDL locked (hi-range)?

Sorry, I know I'm new to 80s, but I want to differentiate between F&R lockers and center diff. I don't have F&R lockers, but I do have a center diff and I do have a CDL switch on the upper part of the dash that says "CENTER DIFF LOCK" (not an icon) and is is described in my owner's manual and the FSM as a switch which is ONLY on vehicles w/o ABS (for 94, anyway).

This is NOT the rectangular CDL switch that can be purchased from Slee.

This is on the curved upper part of the dash and is the same shape as the defrost, ECT, and antenna up/down buttons. I think if you have ABS, you DON'T have this switch, according to my owner's manual and FSM.

It's the same switch function, but on the pre-95 dash. Slee's site only shows a photo of the 95+ dash switch but both are available. I have the pre-95 switch in my 94. I retrofitted it myself, and did the 7-pin mod.

This is the best explanation of how front, centre and rear diffs work, and how they interrelate. Even I can understand this:

Welcome to Land Cruiser Owners On Line

What happened in the US market is that Toyota's research determined (probably rightly so) that most buyers in the US:

a) don't know how to best use a manual centre diff lock

b) don't really have reason to (ie no hard wheeling, or the same "unimproved" terrain you'd find in Africa, Australia, etc)

c) want everything done for them automatically.

So Toyota replaced the manual centre lock option with a viscous coupler (VC) in the transfer case for a vast majority (if not all) 93+ Land Cruisers in this market. The VC is like a limited slip differential which works the same way, except instead of being in an axle, it's in the centre differential - when it senses a difference in traction, it "locks-up" automatically, and releases automatically when the traction is evenly distributed. I think the long and the short of this debate is that if your truck does not have a factory installed CDL switch, you have a viscous coupler, and vice versa.

To further complicate matters, you can remove the VC from a North American spec 80, but you need to install the CDL switch if you do so. My VC was seized, so it's gone now. I don't miss it a bit.

Even if you had the ABS functioning w/ the CDL engaged it would not work correctly. That system relies on being able to vary wheel speeds from the LF,RF. and rear. If you lock the front or center diff then you can not skid only 1 tire. The other that it is locked to will skid also. So the ABS system is correct for shutting down when any of the diffs are locked.

Hi,

Got the switch and did an install. Will check if it works when I next go out.

Had to move it to the right to allow the plug to reach.

The light didn't come on when I clicked it. Strange.
