Center Diff Light Fix - My Experience

To clarify - my CDL seems to work (I can hear a relay click when I push the button and I can still get out of sticky situations easier after engaging it) but my dash lights (CDL, VSC companion lights) don't illuminate. Is this the same symptom y'all experienced? Or was your CDL not working at all?
The transfer case CDL switch that's being replaced above is used ONLY to provide feedback that the CDL is locked, activate the dash light(s), and trigger other ECU functions. The actual locking & unlocking actions are independent of this switch.

Yes, that's what I experienced. Center diff clearly engages when the button was pressed (skidding if you try to make a tight turn), but no visual indicators other than noticing the dash switch is slightly depressed. Replacing the switch on the t-casewith the Beck-Arnley part definitely now illuminates the center diff light in my dash.

To be fair, I don't know what additional VSC lights are supposed to come on as my VSC Trac and VSC Off lights are on for a different issue (hopefully O2 related).

Any chance this can be flaky before failing altogether? I just ordered a replacement but my current switch worked fine today.

Oh sure. Mine was flickering and fading in & out all crazy like. It's just a switch so if the contacts get dirty anything's possible.

Thank you! Ordered the Beck Arnley sensor and 27 mm wrench.

I think if you reach up there with your hands you'll feel it before you see it. There's a wire harness going to it. Top of the transfer case, passenger side.

Does anyone have a picture of where the sensor is located? I found a really close up picture in this thread but I just crawled under the truck and can't seem to get my bearings on where the CDL actually is?

I used the picture in that thread to locate it. Crawl under your Cruiser from the passenger side, nearest to the front wheel, and look around 11 o'clock from the front of the center diff. At least the wire plugging into the top should be visible.

I'd try for a better pic but I don't actually have my Cruiser at home today and I'm not really sure I'd be able to take anything better.

When I use my CDL the light comes on as well as VSC TRAC and VSC OFF lights. When I disengage the CDL the VSC lights stay illuminated until I turn the truck off then back on. The CDL works right away when I hit the switch. Could this switch possibly be the culprit of the VSC lights staying illuminated?

It has been this way since I purchased the vehicle a few months ago. It has worked intermittently for a few hours (only CDL / VSC TRAC light comes on when engaged, then both go off the CDL is disengaged) when I was out wheeling once, but then reverted back to the description above.

That’s exactly the behavior I see, but I haven’t tried the new switch yet.

Look to the rear of the car, at the 11 o'clock:

Wire connector disconnected:

Just FYI and may not be the exact issue as yours. I was experiencing random misfire. When it happened, The VSC OFF & VSC TRAC lights got turned on along with the CEL. When read the code by Techstream, there was a DTC C1201 under VSC whenever those misfire DTC was thrown, as described in this thread. You may want to read the code.

Mine does not throw a CEL code at all. Just the CDL and VSC, but they go away after the truck is shut off

Mine does the same thing. No codes, nothing in TS. There are two switches, no? I figure at least one is bad/going bad.

Report back after you get it installed either way. Would be good information for the forum

Will do, might be a while as I am traveling next month. The lights also went off the last time I disengaged the diff lock (that is, everything was working properly), and I didn't have any error codes when I looked later.

After the lights stayed on until I restarted the vehicle, I got this error code:
C1340 Open Circuit in Center Differential Lock Signal (During Center Differential Lock On)

I've got the part, will try it out if I have the issue again - when it is warmer on the ground up here.

Since CEL is off, it shouldn't be a code for that. While the both VSC lights in on, did you try to read if any code under VSC in TS? Like what tjb got?

I guess it's ok as long as the CDL works. However, not sure if ATRAC will be disabled because of the "VSC TRAC" warning?

I did see the same code when at the very beginning, even everything else worked. Then 2~3 months later, found the switch quit working and had to replace. I guess the C1340 code might be the sign of the switch is failing?

Finally hooked up TS and was able to pull a C1340 code just like tjb
