Hey yall I have a all stock 69 fj40 with a 1f engine. It surges really really bad at idle after installing new gaskets and backfires a little but when I let off the throttle. Seems to be lean and it died out on me after a good hit on the throttle. Seemed like it wasn't getting enough fuel so I raised the float a hair then it wouldn't start. Should ljust go ahead and put a Weber carb on it?

Not a Webber guy. Have you watched the carb vids by one of the members? I forget his name, I don't run the stock carb.

Put the float level back in the proper position. Make sure your valves are set correctly. Check for vacuum leaks. Make sure timing is correct. Put a bottle of fuel dryer in the gas tank. Install a new gas filter - save the old one (dry it out in the sun for a few days) it will be good as new.

Valves were just adjusted, how do I check for vacuum leaks? Timing is correct and fuel filter is new

Check for vacuum leaks
This is the first thought that came to mind when I read the original post.

Stick with the OEM, it's worked for half a hundred years, why change it now?

My favorite way is to take a can of WD-40 with a pee tube. Lightly and quickly spray along the intake manifold gasket perimeter surface with the engine running - If the rpm's kick up there is the leak. You can spray the levels/joints in the carb too. Put a hemostat on the hose to the break booster.

What gaskets did you replace?

That's where I would start.

Raising the float only adds more fuel to the bowl, doesn't do anything for delivery to the engine.

I don’t have a brake booster. It’s a 69

Right but when I looked at the carb it didn’t seem to have any gas in the bowl. I thought maybe it just didn’t get enough

That doesn't really sound like "surging" to me. It does sound a little rough, what's the RPM there?

Edit: and the tube from the port at the base of the carb, does that go to your vacuum gauge?

After reinstalling the carb I forgot to hook it back up. But I did and it got rid of the surging now it just barely idles and hangs onto idle
Ok now all you have to do is go back and un-do any changes you made when you thought something was wrong with the carb. Start with the float make sure it’s close to the middle of the window

now it just barely idles and hangs onto idle
Usually I fix that by adjusting the idle speed screw and the distributor timing. And the idle air screw
