Still working on which way to go with my Carb. Or maybe fuel injection is the way to go. any suggestions on which is a better way to go? Money is an issue, but my 72 fj40 is not a daily driver, so I have some time to work with. Pros and cons?

My carb is a pain but I can't afford fuel injection. If you could afford fuel injection I would go with that. From what I here they are better on the trail, easier to work on and give better gas mileage if you have them set right.

If money is an issue, FI is out the window. Period. (unless you happen to know how to program GM computers and have a machine shop handy)

AFAIK it is still ~ $235 to get a rebuild from Jim C. My truck was down for one day, I got a ready to go carb out of the box. Bolted it on, hooked it up, checked timing, vacuum and was done.
That is the most surefire way to go. You know the price, no dicking around, you get a great carb, the way Toyota meant it to be. Hard to beat.

CruisinGA-Did you send Jim your old carb as a core? Is there any kind of warranty on his carbs. My carb has been acting wacky for a longtime. I just can't seem to get the adjustments right. I even took it apart and cleaned it.

I needed to have a very short downtime-my 40 was my DD, so i confirmed with him what I wanted, and that he had a core, and sent him payment. When he recieved my payment, he rebuilt one of his cores for me, and alerted me when it was done. I then overnighted him the carb, and paid for an overnight return delivery. He will not rebuild you a carb unless you are going to send him a core.

I could not be happier with my carb.

Ok Bailey, what made you decide it needed to be rebuilt?

My truck has always, and still does just run "ok."
by ok I mean extremely reliable and predictable, but lacking power.

Basically, DD113, at whoes shop I hang around a lot or work at some of the time, told me i needed to have it done. Also because he told me I needed vac advance and that I needed to get rid of the remaining portions of my smog equip.

I knew Jim C was the distributor/carb man so I emailed him, told him my situation, and asked him for his suggestion.

After the dist./ carb install there was a noticable increase in high rpm power.-I do still need to have my engine rebuilt.

I would consider it an age thing. If you do not know the history of your carb, you should have it rebuilt. That is an easy assumption because all carb'd LC's (USA) are at least 16 years old.

I just swapped in a Motorcraft 2150 onto my 2F and it works fantastic. I had heard good things about these both on-road and off, and they're cheap so I gave it a shot. I have maybe $40 or so into it including adapters.
I haven't wheeled it yet, but they're supposed to do really well off camber. We'll see.

do you have the stock manifold or aftermarket headers?

Can you give us more info Jason?

Find a Motorcraft 2 barrel from pretty much any Ford with similar displacement as the F/2F (289, 302, etc). Mine was from an early Bronco with a 302. The guy sent it to me for the cost of shipping. They're pretty much a dime a dozen.

Then find an adapter for the Holley carb to the 2F manifold. I got mine from a fellow IH8MUD'er. Lots of people run Holley's so the adapters must be out there.

That'll get it bolted to the 2F. Then it's up to you to make a linkage/cable for it. I took the rig to Texican's shop and he whipped up a nice linkage for it. Clearance is tight with the later boosters, so you need to find a small air cleaner for it.

That's pretty much it. The only tricky part is the linkage, and now that I've helped make one it doesn't seem like too big of a deal. For the cost, you really can't beat this setup. These carbs are supposedly very easy to repair/rebuild and they're everywhere.

If I remember tonite, I'll take some pictures of it.
