Hello—

I’m rebuilding the carb on my ‘71. The discharge weight is missing and has been previously replaced with a spring.

I see talk of modifying a bic pen spring (per JimC) but can’t find if there’s a specific way to do it on the forums. I checked a spare ‘71 carb and that didn’t have one either, LOL!

Will the pen spring work just as well as the weight? I think the weights are unobtanium?

Thanks!

Dang, two carbs missing weights. Usually it's the stopper. I have a spare carb I haven't put back together. I can take some photos/measurements of the weight if you want to fabricate your own. wouldn't be too difficult.

Yeah, I know. The cruiser gods weren't looking down on me favorably last night...

If you have a spare minute and could take some photos/measurements, that would be great. Thanks!

Kris

The end that fits over check ball is hollowed out a bit

the hole is about a 5/64" drill bit
Note the weight isn't square, the 4 corners are 45ed

This is very helpful,I have 1973 that came as a 100% basket case left in dismantled state in brush country complete with pack rats and paper wasps and black widow spiders.I am learning a bunch of valuable info on this site this Toyota will live again!
Now I will make a weight as I have misplaced mine in my dirt floor shop.
Does the 5/64 hole go all of the way through the weight or just counter sunk at end ?

The hole goes through and widens on one end. the weight sorta nests on the steel ball. Big ball goes in that discharge chamber. Small ball goes in the (big) accelerator plunger chamber.

Not to bring this thread back from the dead but I am mid way through the rebuild of my carb which is the exact same one and is also missing. Anyone have a spare I could buy?

The replacement weights that Toyota was offering when I first started rebuilding carburetors 39 years ago did not have holes through them anymore. And I never found them to be a hinderance to the proper functioning of the discharge circuit.

As @Scotty2 and @charliemeyer007 suggest, I think cutting a weight out of any appropriate sized rod stock would suffice…for an F carburetor. What I cannot condone is the ballpoint pen spring suggestion for the 2F carbs. I don’t think the tension is appropriate for the reaction time.

Great thinking @charliemeyer007. Should have been more clear I also need a weight. It is probably most easy to try to make one with the limited tools I have and a brass rod stock. I have a belt sander, micrometer, drill and angle grinder… Should be able to make something relatively similar.
Also thank you @65swb45 for the insight about the through hole!

There you go. A file is wonderful tool in the hands of a motivated person. I have a pack of needle files in every tool box and bag. I learned early how to "whittle" things to "fit". Second was to examine what the part actually does.

As a kid my dad took on all kinds of "basket cases". You had to learn to think about how the parts fit back together because you didn't take it apart. Next there were the missing stuff, things that went flying because of spring loaded detents.

Broken things can be way more entertaining than anything on TV. When I take on a project for friends I tell them its broke now - it could be really broke when I'm done or it could be fixed. Everything has a final use as a target!
