This tent has a 3" thick mattress built in and my tent held up very, very well in heavy wind. Better than many ground tents that I have seen and used.
Except perhaps a Mountain Hardware Basecamp tent for Everest or somththing like that.

That is really good to hear, it has been my only concern about a roof top, other than changes in vehicle handling.

Maybe some day I can take the plunge, too many young kids right now.

 Just get two! ;)

For those who have already got the tent in hand. How big was the shipping/packaging of this thing?

Think it'll fit in a mini-van with the seats out? Or will I need a pickup? The 40 is not an option... I am guessing.

Looking forward to mine arriving. Pics we need more pics... :D

rezarf,
I fit mine in the back of my 80 with the middle seat down and the 3rd row removed. I would think a mini van would be fine. 75" x 45"

For those of you that are using Thule racks, what are you doing to lock the tent on to the bar. It came with two "U" bolts that fit Yakima racks, but nothing that will fit the Thule. The pins go through the brackets and end up sitting about 1/2" below the bar. I can lift my tent up that distance. I am tempted to drill new holes that will also go through my bars, but I'm concerned with weakening the bars and the pain of lining up the holes when putting the tent on the bars.
The other thing I had a problem doing was putting the cover on when the tent was on the 80. I have the Thule 300 feet which sit 5" above the gutter. That leaves very little room to connect the bungees across the underside of the tent. When I get my trailer built this wont be as much of a problem, but for now I used a hanger to reach across and grab the other bungee, but it was a pain. I think I will also get rid of all the pins with the retaining clips and get some pins with ball detents. I can see losing the retaining clips.
I am also thinking of cutting the wire that goes from the tent to the ladder and replacing it with an adjustable piece of webbing so that I can angle the ladder just slightly.

Two in hand and one in the oven. The thought of three squirmy kids in a roof top tent gives me claustorphobic hyperventilation. May go with one ground and one roof top in the future, but for now while they are young we will all be on the ground because it is a bit easier.

OK, my opinion is starting to change. These are kinda neat. Question -- does anyone know what the roof load capacity is for the 80? No one has ever called me and my wife "slim". I have a Yakima on my 4Runner and I seem to recall the weight limit for the basket (Load Warrior) is 250 lbs. Now, this may just be recommendations for load on the basket assuming you'd be traveling at highway speeds. Stationary and weight distributed across the load bars may be a different story. But the question remains -- how much weight will the roof safely hold?

I haven't recieved my tent yet, but you could always source out some square ubolts that would fit the Thule systems. Any good hardware store should carry them.

I would drill through the crossbar as a last resort.

Just my .02

Is this really a for sale thread now? I am going to start a new thread in the outfitting section that talks about these tents, unless someone has already done that. Will post the new link.

Build a rack and use full length gutter mounts and it will support your slim wife and her friends with no problem.

I've seen an 80 will well over 800 pounds of people standing on a gutter mounted roof rack. No issues...

It's highly complicated:flipoff2:

Will someone please do me a favor and take a picture of the device that bolts to the Yackimas and keeps the tent from sliding from side to side?
Just curious what the factory setup is as I had to devise my own.

No u-bolts in my package either. I like skillet's rubber-cushioned hose clamps. He is also correct about putting them towards the center.

any new feedback on design, construction quality etc?
