bump, hoping some one has an answer

Fjwagon, My question started this thread. I've yet to do much work on what I hope to be the fix. My parts just came in yesterday but I won't be able to get to work on it until Monday at best.

One of the things I am going to do is rebuild my compressor...I plan to take & post up pictures to try to help others that may be in the same boat.

I had a A/C shop trouble shoot my system, I bought the parts & will try do all the work myself. As I learn I will post up & hopefully it will help you.

I had several issues to deal with, first of all, my compressor is leaking(at the seals hopefully) & it wouldn't suck in the freon. I also had a kink in the lines going to the condensor which may also contribute to no freon going in. You may want to consider looking at these areas on your rig.

Long post w/o a lot of help...but when I start the work, maybe it will give you some ideas. To be less confusing, I may start a new thread titled 'compressor rebuild' or some such.

FJWagon, the A/C amplifier is used to turn off the AC clutch when the RPM's drop below 6-700, I'm not sure why, but that's what it does, the knob is to adjust at what RPM it does disengage.

John, my offer of help still stands, but the weekends are better for me :D I've been busy busy lately.

Thanks Jerod..I've still got your offer on the table & may get with you. Right now however, it looks like I may start Mon/Tue. It's been a slow process gathering all the parts and I am still waiting for one more part from Napa. Look for updated post.

the ac amplifier does more than turn the pump of at low rpm,it is what controls the system entirely, using the thermistor and pressure switch.and by the way you might want to consider using duracool or other hydrocarbon refridgerant.it has way lower head pressures which means way less power consumed to operate pump.I know i switched from 134 to duracool and couldnt believe the differance in power it made!!!!!!!!!!!!!it also has way less of a rate of leakage because it isnt as small a particle as 134.it was 90 deg today with super high humidity and had no problem getting 40 deg vent temps.this is on an 85 runner.

Sorry for the highjack, I was curious after working on the A/C. After getting it charged, A/C clutch would not engage. No power was present at the clutch. Anyhow, I checked the fuse, one relay, thermister, and pressure swith. Cleaned both swithes. One them had a bad cold solder joint so resoldered it and that did not fix the clucth problem. At this point, I had power going into the A/C amp but nothing coming out. I tried adjusting the rpm pot and no joy, So I figured it could be a bad relay or the card it self. After checking relay with Ohm meter and cleaning the contacts I replaced it and this time it kinda sorta worked. That's when I figured that the "rpm" at the A/C amp meant the rpm of the engine not the rpm of the fan.:) i tweaked the engine's rpm and the A/C's clutch started working. Thanks for the info. and sorry for highjack
