out of curiosity, what would be the distance and duration of this event?
i dont know if you are looking at a cross country adventure, or more something deep in the woods, kind of like a winch challenge?
These aren't long rally/race type of events, the OUtback Challenge is a series of timed events that test the skill of the driver, toughness of the truck, and all that. The events consist of short obstacle type races, water crossings, winching events in water and mud, winching over obstacles, winching up rock faces, night obstacle courses, hill climbs etc etc. This is not like a baja or anything, the race course in an event like this at the longest is 3 hours I believe and some shoter races last a few minutes.
I am not in to a cross country race, I like the technical aspects of winching and water crossings, and generally keeping a vehicle running and trying to complete the 8-9 day event.
I spectated at the 07 Outback Challenge in May. It is an awesome event. This years event was cut short due to excessive rain and flooding. Hopefully I'll make it onto this years DVD as we were evacuated with the camera crew. They got heaps of footage of us coming through all the flooded roads.
The OBC is held on private property. There are four properties all based around Broken Hill that the comp is held on. They have a prologue stage in town to organise the groups and then the competitors are split into four groups where they go to the four stations and compete in a round robin situation.
The four stations have different terrain. Viewmont Station has mud, Denian station has sand and Poolamacca and Nundooka Stations have rock.
The comp has a heap of different types of stages. They range from traditional winch challenge style events to outright speed timed events to navigation stages. As the event goes for a full week and the competitors get penalised for outside assistance reliability is a huge factor. Keeping the vehicle going all week using whatever they have is the best part of the comp.
I have a heap of photos of the actual comp on my other computer if anybody wants me to post some up.
nothing except more and more land gets closed down each year. the goal of the Seirra club is to close the complete east face down from California to the Yukon...and they are well on their way to succeeding...
The event isnt planned yet - just in the dreaming stage - but we have to find a good area to do it. That's why we need to check out some trails near by.
how large? Most of the good areas I have seen in B.C. are now closed. If we approach the government maybe?!. Canada is large but the problem is availability, access Hmm! Speaking for myself a few years ago I was visiting the Kootenays ie Rossland , there is a ski hill
called Red Mountain, the area that I am thinking for a course(rocks , thick winchable forest mud and steep terrain) I think there is about 75 wicked kms or more that could be set up in different heats. The mountain is called Granite it is the larger mountain on the ski hill that goes behind into an area called Squaw Basin. This trail that we travelled took us 2 days to travell 15km up the trail called Long Squaw. That was just one little area with roads, trails forking everywhere. I wish I had more time to look into finding more areas.
