New to the site. I am looking at getting a 91 Landcruiser or a 97 LX 450 that are for sale in my area. Both have the same option same miles (about 120k) and no lockers. Looking to do the basics in mods. (lift 33", bumper, arb lockers, ect.) Any input would be helpful.
97 without a doubt. 1FZ engine (larger more powerful), OBD 2 (computer allows you to read/diagnose more), interior features(revised interior), airbags (none on the 91), ABS,
Get a '93 plus model year. '91 and '92 have the 3FE Engine which while a great long lasting motor, does not have the power and smoothness of the 1FZ. Also they lack rear disc brakes and full floating rear axle. They do not have side impact bars in the doors and no ABS. '91 and '92 FJ80's are petty much a '62 with the updated body. Still a great truck but should be selling for much less than a '93+. Good luck and welcome to mud!
I have no issues with my 91 for engine power etc... It does burn loads of fuel. But it is a nice engine. And it doesn't have the head gasket issues that supposedly plague 15% of FZJ engines...
If the 91 is fairly cheap it could be made into a great offroad rig. You would have more money in your pocket to put some nice mods on.
it depends on what your planning on doing.
the lx will have a much, much better interior as well as having stronger axles, better brakes and a more powerful engine. Stock or slightly modified, if you can afford it this is your vehicle.
Now if you are going to be modding like crazy and changing to even stronger axles or a motor swap then the much much much cheaper 91 should be your choice.
I personally, down the line want to do a motor swap so i'm happy with my 92 with the longer lasting 3fe for now.
I had 2 '91's and loved them, they were both great. But after owning my '95 for awhile i could'nt go back. More motor, rear disc's, obd 2 compliant blah blah blah... It sounds like you are planning to build it up so the locker scene doesnt apply but I would go with the '97 you wont regret it. If I had to do it all over I would have gone with '93 and up to start with. Welcome and
Just like everyone of these threads who ever haves a 91-92 will tell you to get that and who ever has a 93-97 will tell you those are the best but, honestly get a 91
My recommendation is research the facts on this site and decided what year is best for your goals and then go out and look for the right vehicle. Don't limit yourself to the two vehicles in your area.
If I had to choose between the two the 97' without a doubt.
I guess I'll put in my two cents. When I was looking I figured if I got a newer vehicle, really wouldn't look back. Besides, your comparing an LC with an LX. LX has much better creature comforts. If I got the older vehicle, I'd be thinking,"what if" alot more than if I got the LX.
