Building a fire in the backcountry is feasible, but I've never bothered with one for cooking, only for warmth and ambience. They're great if you are spending more than one day in a particular location and have the time to cut wood. Usually I avoid backcountry campfires in the winter due to the high chance of a stray spark burning a hole in a piece of expensive clothing.
