I am thinking maybe you are talking about Balsam Mountain Campground....... it sits at like 5300ft in the great smokies national park and is located between maggie valley and cheerokee.

There is a cool little 14 mile gravel road you can take not more than a mile or two from the campground :Heintooga Ridge Road, Balsam Mountain on Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina

even if this isn't the camground you were thinking about you should really consider trying it as it is an awesome place to camp HTH :cheers:

Mile High seems close but I remember the campground had a website with some cool pics...seems to be a very similar campground with primitive (car) camping. Black Balsam isn't it but both of these seem like good choices. We will probably stay in Mile High during our July Camping trip.

May = Lost Mine
June = GSMTR
July = Mile High or similar
August = Michigan UP trip
September = ???

Balsam Mountain Campground and Black Balsam are two completely different places...... Balsam Mountain is in the Smokies and Black Balsam is in the shining rock wilderness near Brevard. Also black Balsam is only open August 15 to Jan 1st for hunting season. HTH

hmmmm..... that mile high one is only a couple of miles from the balsam one in the smokies. If you go steve def. check out that road I mentioned above it is a nice drive :cheers:
