I am currently looking for maps or books of trails around my old Hood Ridgecrest so whenever I go visit my parents I can hit the trails around Death Valley and the foothills of the Siera Nevada Mtn's.
So I came across this one and you gotta love the LX on the cover!
Anybody else have recommendations? Someone posted a while ago in one of my threads these three: Guide to SoCal Back Rds. & 4whl drive trails, Backcountry Adventure SoCal, & California Rd. & Rec. Atlas. But I am not sure how well those cover the Mojave Desert. I would like to buy only 1 or 2 books or maps for our SoCal area.

I am also looking for a good Baja map or book. Any recommendations? All I currently have is The OLD Baja Book but need something not so out dated. :D

As far as books about Baja go, your out-of-print Baja Almanac is probably the most up-to-date printed map book on the market. They're supposedly coming out with a new edition June '07, but they've been putting the date back for a while, so I wouldn't be surprised if they delay again.

That's what I was looking for! No what I have is a brown spiral spline Baja Book from like 79'. I think it was the first Baja book published and I got it off eBay more for memorabilia and to use till' I get the Almanac.
I will be adding my e-mail to the list for the Almanac!

I concur with Shahram, the Baja Almanac is what I have, and it's the best I've seen on the market. I also have an older (1991) book called The Baja Highway; a geology and biology field guide for the Baja Traveler. It's written by John Minch, a fellow SDSU geology alumni, and has detailed directions on finding fossil locations in Baja. Also gives some insight on where those "roads to nowhere" actually go.

As far as Calfornia goes, you might try Gem Trails of Southern California. They also have one on Nor Cal, Arizona, Nevada, and probably others.

Ain't nothin' wrong with findin' some gems and fossils while you wheel!:hillbilly:

x3 on the Baja Almanac. They used to print them in two versions Norte and Sur (North and South) back in the day and they now combine them into one version, the one Shahram pointed out. I found a copy for a friend last year before the 1000 at Kartek in Corona. They had multiple copys. I also found a few by searching the distributors when the publisher was out of copys.
