Both vehicles you listed will more than satisfy your needs. I suggest you do some searches about 2000 model year and early transmission failures. It would be enough for me to pass on any 2000 and get either a 98-99, or 2001+. Also do some searches on early models and weak front diffs.

One piece of advice, for your needs the traction control (ATRAC) is more than capable in comparison to the manual electronic lockers. I've put my 04 through some tough jeep trails and never been let down by ATRAC.

Thanks so much, Anthony. Great info.

I'm taking to 2002 for a spin tomorrow, so here's hoping she drives as nice as she looks in the photos.

Thanks again!

Looking at a 96 LX450 120k miles in NYC need advice

looking at a 96 LX450 to buy need advice
hello people,
newbie here getting ready to buy a an LX450 , 1996 in NYC.
i need some advice , below is the list of Pros and Cons

Pros:
• fully loaded with no Navigation
• paint looks mint except for one scratch
• new tires
• new front brakes
• it looks like its had a recent tune up , with new cap, wires, plugs, new oil filter that i can see.
• everything works
• less than 100k miles
• motor is totally quiet when running , i was able to start it from cold and no smoke, the valves did chatter for about 2 seconds right at start up .
• when i drove the truck it felt totally tight and steered straight

the cons:
• the trans pan looked i like it was leaking a
• the front diff was seeping
• the front axles were crusty with grease and oil
• the rear axle diff was seeping
• if you face the motor to the right below the oil filter it seems to be leaking some sort of oil, maybe transmission lines? 2 small steel lines.
• check engine light ( i don't have a code reader)
• rusted out tow hitch
• the running boards are rusted out
• surface rust forming on the bottom of the frame rails. none of it was flaking.
• when i was driving the truck if i applied the breaks in a firm aggressive manor they would almost goto the floor and anti-lock system would kick in , i looked at the rear brakes and they looked like they were toast but the front look new. the brake reservoir was full.
• the front driver seat is ripped and not repairable
• the passenger seat should be redone also , its not ripped but it doesn't look perfect.

Mods i would want to do as soon as i got it:
• steel bumpers and running boards (slee maybe?)
• old man emu suspension lift (around 3 inches)
• new wheels and tires (black, i am thinking 33's)
• detail it out , it needs to be cleaned.

i am trying to get a guestimate on what it would cost to get it mechanically sound before i do the mods and if anyone knows a good landcruiser guy in NYC, BK, Queens, or NJ even that could do any or all of the work.

thanks in advance
Ray

Hello there. The 1996 year falls into the 80-Series model, you have posted in the 100-Series forum (1998-2007).

Try posting your questions here instead.

With that said, as a previous 80-Series owner I can say pretty much your entire list of cons are very common issues on any 80-Series. All of them can be fixed with some repair and preventive maintenance once purchased. That along with ongoing maintenance and you can easily get another 200-300k out of the vehicle. When it comes to the sale price, understand the repairs for that list of cons will not be cheap. More than likely in the $3-4k range.

Hey Mudders,

What is the going price for an 06 100 series with about 70k miles in good condition?

I was thinking around 30k?

Thanks

Around $30k give or take $2k depending on condition and location in the US. Factor in that pending 90k service which is not cheap...

Thanks Anthony

The Cruisers will both live in Western Washington.

(:princess: wants the LX instead of a Toyota)

Of course she does.

Sorry to say, but that 2003 LX is WAY over priced. I would either try to talk them down (unlikely seeing it's private party), or keep up the search.

Any body got a price opinion on a 98 with over 220K?
It claims to have all the scheduled maintenance done, it has an OME lift, slee diff drop, sliders, decent tires, Rear and Center Lockers, ARB Front locker, and a good interior? I might get rid of my 93 fully locked, maintained, 80 series in favor of slightly better gas mileage and more power under the right foot. The addition of it being a bit more built is a bonus.

She is letting me lift it though :D.

So heres the update: Bought a 2003 LX with 110k mi (serviced from day 1 at the dealer, all reccomended maintanence). Ended up paying $20k, plus $1k to ship it from Texas to Reno.

Already putting together a list of parts for it but thinking of doing the OME 2.5'' lift, 305s (if I can get them to fit), ARB/Warn up front, completely remove AHC. Then maybe a rear locker. Supposed to be her DD but also our "comfy" expedition/camp truck.

305/what?

If your goal is DD with expedition/camping then lockers is a big waste of money. ATRAC will get you everywhere you need to go and more. Unless you decide to regear your axles, then it makes sense while already in there.

305 70 16 tires. Probably dump the OEM 18'' wheels. We run some pretty remote trails in the middle of nowhere NV so a rear locker is a good piece of mind. Plenty of spots where even aired down 345 KM2s in my 80 series wouldnt cut it and I had to lock up. Front locker would be overkill. I dont think I'd re-gear with the 305s

With all do respect, you can't compare a 80-Series open diff to a 100-Series ATRAC. Apples and oranges, but hey it's your money, and our US economy needs all the spending it can get! For the record, I've owned and drove both. ;)

305/70R16 (33x12.5) is nothing, the 100-Series can handle those easily, even bone stock suspension. Only possible concern, depending on the tire selected, is rubbing on the UCA. However they should be fine, and if it does rub spend some of that good money on 1" spacers!

If you are considering the GY Duratracs, they run very wide. 305's in the DuraTrac variation is the only 305 that rubs the UCA without spacers. All others fine, from what I can gather. 305's fit nicely under the 100 :) They tuck up nicely in the fenders.
