Nulla is getting an engine rebuild

last weekend the mystery of the tapping noise on my engine finally revealed itself, while driving back from a trip the tapping noise suddenly became very loud. the culprit is the #2 cylinder. i am told that this is the weakness of the 12ht engine at around 400km, the upper piston ring comes loose and find itself on top of the piston, which created the loud tapping noise as it hits against the cylinder head.

the good news is my engine will now get rebuild with an after market piston with a steal insert on top of the piston. i am told that this solve the weakness of these engine.

i broke down in Paso Robles, California and found a diesel shop who don't seem to be afraid of overhauling a 12ht. Paso Robles is in central coast of California best known for it wine. so that is the good news.

the bad news is we are still trying to figure out how much this is all gonna cost us? and trying to source out an overhaul kit, ouchs!

Man that is bad. Well I guess it is getting rebuilt afterall.
How is the exhaust turbine ? Did part of the piston ring stay in the cylinder or did it go out the exhaust valve?

I think somepne sold a bunk engine and knew it. That doesn't happen overnight. Oh, well, spilt milk as they say....

I wonder what a rebuild will cost. For the same price, you could probably drop a brand new cummins 3.3 in it. But, the 12HT is a great motor no doubt.

we have not removed the piston yet so i don't know if there is any further damage, i check the compressor side of the turbine that seems to be fine. no excessive play.

i think everything including a rebuild engine will be between 5,000 to 6,000 dollars, that is taking it out of the rig, to the machine shop, overall kit, and the labor cost to put it all back together and get it running.

i have a personal attachment to the 12ht because i have spend so much time learning about it and working on it, but i have thought about a switch. however, unless i get a brand new engine it seems that i will end up spending about the same and still would not know what i have. a 1hz, 1hdt for example, would be spending a whole lot more by the time the conversion is all done.

i just learned about the 3.3 cummins on your post and i have just started researching. do you know someone who has done this conversion on a 40 series and what is the cost?....... not that i will do it just want to look at my options. thanks:cheers:

Yes, there is a Mud member Eco45 named Scott (and he's a Mud Vendor) up in Oregon who has done this conversion to MANY 45 series cruisers including FJ45 LWB and FJ45 short wheel base pickups. They turn out incredible. He does very very nice work.

I think the brand new motors are ~$5000US from Cummins and fit nicely in a 40 series cruiser. These motors are also used to replace the 1HZ in 75 series mining trucks if I remember correctly. And they are factory turbo, IIRC.

we have not removed the piston yet so i don't know if there is any further damage, i check the compressor side of the turbine that seems to be fine. no excessive play.

amado this is Edy sorry on that engine but i think you need a very monster engine to put on that nula truck because allready put too much money on it take agood decision on the engine for once so you can have something very powerfull and eficient on dissel with a lot tork on it ., well in another hand i wish you a very happy merry cristmas and a happy new year 2011

good to hear from you Edy, when this episode is done i will come by on a saturday and have some pupusas.

How is your engine comming allong?

i dropped it off today at Eddings Engine Rebuilding Inc., Remanufactured Engines Gas and Light Diesel, High Performance Engines, and Marine Engines. they will rebuild my engine. Edding Engine is a performance engine rebuilder, they are building some amazing engine there spoke at length with the owner, took a tour of the shop. i feel confident that my 12ht is in good hand. the owner will let me watch the build. in addition to blue printing meaning they will build it to factory specs and record all the specs of the engine. they will also;
1. smooth out the intake, exhaust and all areas of the head so that the engine will breath better. they call this process "match porting".
2. balance all rotating components crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons.
3. we will install after market piston with steal inserts.

on the camshaft, i am still researching the idea of grinding the camshaft so that the opening of the valves will open longer in duration and wider. this will allow more fuel and air into the cylinders. i found a shop in Australia, they said they grind at least one 12ht camshaft a month with good result, bringing more power at the low end and mid range.

i started a thread at the diesel engine forum i will probably up date that the most while we are rebuilding the engine here is the link; https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/414972-rebuilding-my-12ht-2.html

fascinating thread, and very unique vehicle, cool! it will be sweet to have a fresh engine at least. -Matt

Thanks for the kind words 1tontoy, however I think the weight of this truck might be a little much for a B3.3.

Have you had a chance to weigh the truck recently? I was working on a double cab and hope to bring it back out of the dark corner it has been hiding in. The finished weight of the truck is currently a guess but plays a lot into the springs and even rims. Most stock FJ40/45 rims are good for about 2000 lbs each so if your trucks weight goes past 8000 lbs and you are running stock rims you could separate a rim. I am thinking my truck is going to be close to 7000 lbs without passengers or cargo so I am having Stockton Wheel make me some wheels that are rated at 3000 lbs each.

I am surprised I hadn't stumbled across this thread before, it is a great build and I actually saw your truck in person at the 2010 Overland Expo--too bad we didn't get a chance to talk.

I just read through the entire post, that’s a neat job you’ve done. Awesome pictures!

thanks, my engine is still at the engine rebuild shop, it is taking a little while because of the modification i am doing and i am trying to have a specific person to put the engine together. i can not wait to get back on the build it has been a while but i am also excited on the performance of this rebuild engine here is that thread https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/414972-rebuilding-my-12ht-3.html
