I like the sound of the discordant horns. 1 high pitch, 1 low pitch. You choice of recover bottle is fine give the cost of a period correct OEM. Use the extra savings for anything else

I didn’t even realize they were different pitches! Too much heavy metal must have blasted out my ear drums 🤘

Good deal 😁

Back from a work trip and found a leak on the truck. Looks like I’ve got a coolant leak from the water pump…AGAIN.

Third time is a charm right?

Found this little drop on the front diff drain bolt and a puddle under the car 🤦

Spent this morning with my loved one. Hope you all did too 😉

New water pump is in, used all new gaskets (like before) and ran out of rtv but had a new tube of FIPG so used that. Hopefully it holds, if not this is a quick 2 hour job for me know so it doesn’t bother me anymore lol

Even pulled the whole radiator assembly out which saves a bunch of time.

Then it’s back together and getting the fan on.

I couldn’t imagine this job on my Tacoma or any new vehicle for that matter.

Let it sit for about 3 hours and then fired it up to check for leaks. So far we’re ok but I didn’t get the system up to operating temp gonna do that tomorrow 😁

Also, really thought I found a one pipe solution for the lower radiator connection. I’m not going with any heat and was hoping to replace the split lower coolant line with a solid one but the opening at the radiator on this is too large but the water pump side fits great.

Got this from gates and was hoping it would work 😞 o well…

I've never found a one piece solution for the lower hose because they are different diameters.

As for leaks, I'm a fan of the Barrs a Stop Leak with water pump lube. I've used it for years on every car I've owned that and never had an issue. I also know that Chevy uses it on their new vehicles right off the assembly line.

I changed the air filter on my Silverado… I miss those days of just spinning the wingnut, pop off the cover and your done in 5 minutes…that took 30 minutes to disassemble, wipe out and and 30 minutes to get it all plugged together to finish up

I’ve found that if I bill myself labor I can pay myself and then spend that money on LC parts 😬

Alright got my two road test buddies along and we didn’t find any leaks after an hour of driving around this morning.

Also had a wild idea of putting an ARB drawer in the back, it fits lengthwise but I still have to open both doors to gain access to the drawer. Not sure how I feel about this yet. I have two of them but together they are 42 inches and the width between the wheel wells is 41 inches…darn!

I had these in my 100. Probably going to have to buy another 100 so I have something to do with these unless they fit a 60 or 80 series 😀

bdawg23, thanks for this thread. I admire your persistence and good attitude. It's inspiring! Such a cool rig. And the doggers just made me laugh, thanks for that too!

Regarding the bolt/plug in your exhaust manifold (pic at post #276), you may want to remove the bolt and turn it around so the nut is on the outside (as suggested by another Mudder) and then stake the threads of the bolt against the nut. And stake them well. That way it stays tight, no shmoo or prayers required.

As to your philosophy/lessons learned at post #289, I have learned all those lessons too the hard way more times than I can remember. Sharing your experience is a generous public service and a needed kick in the ... uh, heads-up to a certain ... dude I see when I look in the mirror.

Cheers, and hope to see you on the trail someday!

Thank you, totally forgot about swapping the head of the bolt/nut! I have a working list and I’ve got this added now.

Thx for the words of encouragement!

Today I was on a mission to change gear oil in the front/rear pumpkins, 4 speed and transfer case.

I drove the 40 to the auto parts store and when I got home I saw that I had a leak from the transfer case so I didn’t bother changing this fluid. I’ll dig into this later…

Transmission and rear pumpkin were straightforward but man did I screw up the drain bolt on the front differential. I couldn’t get a socket on the bolt so I spent about 20 mins with a dremal grinding away metal. Once I did get the socket on the drain bolt wouldn’t budge.

Naturally after some heat and a breaker bar didn’t work I tried the impact gun which turns out is the fastest way to turn a bolt head into a circle ☹️

Standby…

You might try welding a nut to the old one and then get the good wrench on it.

I have seen this done on a few trucks to replace the frozen drain plug with a more adaptable Allen wrench fit
