I measured the companion flange today with my micrometer and averaged 1.423" so I ended finding (also on eBay) the 99143 size which according to the chart should fit the best. I also found a brand new companion flange for about $80 from man-a -fre shipped to my house so I ordered that as well.

I also ordered 10mm allen head drain bolts to replace the 27mm bolts that are on there and starting to loose their corners. At least when I get back from my work trip I should have all the parts to get this back together properly.

I ordered two seals so I have an extra ready to go.

appreciate all the input and guidance here from everyone!

alright! We did some good work this weekend! Thanks to all that helped with their feedback. I used FIPG on the new seal and the leak is gone.

Before I left for a 6 day work trip I put a pan under the drip. So much for "just a drip" the amount of fluid that collects is quite a bit, so imagine driving it which forces more out and then letting it sit. It's no wonder the fluid kept getting low quicker than I expected.

here is everything I used to do the install. I also replaced the fill and drain bolts with the newer 10mm allen versions. The seal pictured is the new old seal I pulled out.

After remove the old seal I cleaned all the surfaces with alcohol and reinstalled the new seal with FIPG. I made a press out of 2" pvc so I could tap the new seal into place.

The speedi sleeve I ordered was too small so I need to learn how to use a micrometer better. Good thing I ordered a new companion flange so not all was lost. In fact that was probably the better way to go anyway. Hard to argue with a new part. Fit and finish was so nice.

I don't know what those two green wires are for, I thought they were for the reverse lights but I hooked them up to the reverse light switch on the tranny and they didn't seem to do anything.

Anyway...

nice to see this one come together and get resolved. Thanks all!!

Front diff drain bolt is finally out! It’s been seized for awhile. I picked up a rockwood mig 160 from Eastwood for $199 shipped to my house. Learning to weld has been on my list and this felt like a good reason to buy one 😬

Took em awhile to realize I needed more power so I’ve got some ok weld on top of a lot of garbage. I did my best to fill the center with weld and I think that did the trick. First time it broke off and second time it worked.

Drained the fluid again. My front differential fluid is nasty and it’s going to need changed again even after this to keep flushing out this sentiment.

Hope everyone is gearing up for a fun Memorial Day weekend!

Hey B…. That sinking feeling when an attempt goes wrong…glad this worked. By the way, yuk!

What size wire are you using in the MiG?

Well, hoping .030. I think…it’s a better starting wire for developing your “touch” . I started 40 years ago with ac/dc rods. Took a little effort to get the feel. I also use .023 but it needs a little more finesse.

Are you also using gas or flux wire

Just flux for now, my goal is to get some practice in and eventually fix a few spots on the 40. I’ll switch to a gas shielding for that.

FYI; when I first started MiG, I was able to rent a gas bottle for about $28.00/month until I had eventually bought my own. Made a very nice difference in the outcome

Definitely not $28 anymore. .023 is great for sheet metal. My fabricator uses it for almost everything when he’s not TIG welding.

I’ll ask about renting, they basically said the tank was $300 and refills were $30. Maybe I should check on marketplace.

Be aware I BELIEVE tanks carry a 5 yr visual inspection cert. so if you find one, be sure it is fillable. This may have changed since I started using tanks but that is what I remember. Now, the people who fill mine basically just swap a tank for mine and it is about $30

Good call out! I’ll do more research before I buy. Definitely more research than I did when I bought my cruiser 😉
