All td04 designated turbos have the same shaft diameter. T004, td04l, td04h, td04hl and the ever weird te04h Ordered from smallest to largest but the old school td04 and the L are very similar in size.

Cross referencing the pic on the auction site I was able to pull off the manufacture I'd number from the compressor cover
: 49189-01800
Checked metlet and numerous other sites and confirmed td04hl-15t-6

Those lists can be a great resource, but always remember that it is second hand info. Always cross reference the sereal numbers before you buy something and even then you could get screwed if the cover was switched to another turbo.

Thanks for the tech guys! Do some of the td04's have different turbine wheel sizes though? It was my understanding that they did.

Gerg...is there a public source for crossed referencing turbo part numbers?

Yes TD04 denotes the shaft size. The letters after denotes the turbine size L, HL there are three sizes the TD04, the TD04L and the largest TD04HL.

Got it. Am I right in remembering the h and l also denote water and oil cooled respectively? Or is that misinformation?

The bearing housing can be oil or water & oil cooled for any variant.

I also found and downloaded a MHI pdf detailing vehicles using all types of td04 turbos, core serials and assay serials, service parts, oversized parts, shafts, wheels, bearing and turbine housings from 87-2000 that hast let me down so far.
