Sorry folks, no pictures yet. Something is going on with our camera and I can't get it to download the pics....so a description will have to be enough for now.

I picked up the BTJ62 yesterday at Proffitt's Cruisers. My first glimpse was of the old (new?) girl sitting outside in the sun...awesome! The new color looks GREAT, it's like an "olivey" green, good color for a wagon. I walked up and around it, looking at details like the new fuel tank, the new sliders, new wheels and tires, hydro-assist steering, Marlin Hy-Steer. I kept looking back at the color, because it looks SO different. I opened it, sat inside, took in the familiar smell and feel of the steering wheel. I check out the three shifters (new Marlin ToyBox) and the very clean install. So far, it looks GREAT, but I still haven't popped the hood or fired it up.

I take the key and start it....kicked right up, starts to rattle. It's not as louder as I expected (or prepared for), and the noise is reduced when I close the door.

I take it out for a drive....it's hard to describe, it's SO difficult to associate this new beast with the old truck I've had for fifteen years now.

I didn't have much time to shoot the Cruiser sh*t with Jeremiah, Alex and John, because I'd driven 5.5 hours there and still had to drive back.

I put 365 miles in it on the drive back, average speed 59 MPH, top speed 76 MPH, the vast majority of the drive on 5th gear. Truck shifts smoothly, and is not very noisy unless you step off the throttle. I cannot hear the turbo spooling (no significant whine), but that might change when I re-tune for low altitude.

The power increase was HUGE, going up from 8,000 to 10,000 feet in 5th gear going 70 MPH is an experience I'd never had in a Land Cruiser before. The 4BT yields max power at low RPM's so 1st and 2nd gear on the H55F are short. It will take time to get used to it.

I'll measure fuel consumption better on the drive down, but my initial impression had me laughing out loud several times. I used a little over a third of a tank yesterday on 365 miles, I estimate the fuel consumption was somewhere north of 26 miles per gallon (types Henry with a HUGE grin on his face)!

Today I'll borrow another camera to take a couple of pictures of it, I'll try to post something tomorrow.

Oh, I forgot to add. 4LO-LO is *ludicrously Low*, I had to floor it to get it moving! I suspect I won't be using that combo much, but I love the fact that for the first time since 2000, I can actually slow down the big bus on a trail. I can't wait for the Lone Star Land Cruiser Roundup, that will probably be its first real test, after I get a BUNCH of details cleaned up and finished.

Merry Christmas, folks, thanks for everyone's support and patience!!!!!

AWSOME to see you get the old girl back :)

Merry Christmas to you

"NO! Low isn't low enough! Shift to LUDICROUSLY LOW!"

Glad to hear it's goin good. I can't wait for the day my rig will have a 4BT and NV4500 in it. I'm really liking those Marlin boxes too. A buddy of mine is putting one on his pickup. Meantime, Merry Christmas and hopefully it'll continue to blow your mind.

Sounds like an amazing truck. I can't wait to see pictures of it.

How much power does that 4BT have? Rough estimate that is.

This truck sounds incredible. Merry Christmas.

Princess has always been one of my favourite Cruisers, really looking forward to seeing her new incarnation. Nice Christmas present to yourself, Henry!

Sweet cant wait to see her .... 26 mpg you suck :crybaby:

Nice to meet ya

It was nice to meet you at Proffitt's yesterday. Glad to hear that you are thrilled by it, as you should be, it's an amazing truck. Definitely, post up some pics. I know these guys are very anxious to see it.

I am curious to see what kind of mileage you get. Keep me posted. It's good to have another Cummins in a Cruiser. We should start our own forum :)

Happy Holidays and Congrats,
John

Sorry to hijack here...

You work at Proffitt's? I'm wondering how much work it is to strip out all the EFI stuff from a 62 in order to do a 4BT conversion, and if anyone's able to get anything back if the 3FE and auto tranny are in good condition (despite high mileage). If you don't, then of course, disregard ;p

Sooooooooooo How many banks would I have to rob to swing something like that?
I think they should reshoot "point break" but use Cruiser heads rather than surfers.......;p

Definately. That and a specific list of what was done!! Kinda like lowtideride did for his ROTW- Velveeta Wag thread.

I can hear rear axles snapping right now ;)

Not to hijack Henry's thread but.....Yep,
I am now working at Proffitt's Cruisers. It is not a big deal to rip out the EFI stuff from a 62. This is the easy part! Unfortunately, 3FE's are not worth much. The automatics are pretty much worthless. You might find someone who wants a good running 3FE for another Cruiser but don't hold your breath. It seems like there are quite a few of 3FE's out there because of diesel or V8 swaps. And.........to top it all off, 60/62's are dropping in price because of fuel prices.

The 4BT conversion is quite expensive. The reason it is expensive is the cost of the parts. Motors are generally $2,500+. And then you factor in: OD transmission, T-case adaptor (or centered rear diff), SOA (if not already done), hydroboost brakes, and all the small parts, it really adds up. It basically is a $10,000+ conversion not including accessories. And this all depends on the price of the motors.

Sure, it can be done cheaper if a person found a good motor for a better price or already had SOA or found a cheap OD tranny. Also, you could save a few bucks by doing it yourself but you better do a lot of homework. It is not an easy conversion. The price of 4BT's are going up and getting harder to find. Some of my sources can't even get them anymore. Oh, you can buy a new one from Cummins for about $8,000-10,000 depending on model.

The 4BT is a sweet conversion. I have put over 12K miles on mine since May and I absolutely love it. Proffitts has 10 more 4BT conversions scheduled for 2006. Everything from 80 series, 60 series, 55, and even a FJ43.

My Cruiser budget is blown, and the 4340 rear axles didn't come out until after I'd blown it. Otherwise, they'd be in there. As it stands, I'm already setting aside a little bit every month so I can get them later next year, like around this time.
