While changing shocks on my '94 80 I broke off the lower rear shock mount bolt at the head leaving all of the threaded part in the mount. I drilled al 1/4" hole for the extractor; but, it won't budge...even after doses of PB Blaster and heating the mount. Any ideas? I don't want to break off the extractor in the 1/4" hole. Maybe I should drill out the bolt and rethread the mount...?

Thanks,

Bob

I had the same situation except i broke extractor inside and it made my life :censor::censor::censor:... but after i just drilled the bolt out and taped the new thread and have been fine for 3 years now.

Just drill it out and you will be fine

Isnt that mount a stud welded to the bracket? Maybe i dont remember correctly but it sounds like you broke the nut off and the stud is left. Cut it off and weld on a new one.

Simplest solution: weld a bolt with the head cut off to the remains of the broken nut.

Mine's been like that for a year with zero issues.

Shock mount with broken bolt in it > new bolt with head cut off welded to remains (threads out) > insert lower end of shock onto newly welded bolt > install nut onto threaded end of bolt.

Here are some pics (not mine):

Thanks for the info:

Drilled out the broken bolt with a 27/64" bit. Retapped with a 12mm 1.25 tap and replaced with new bolt.

On the passenger side I hammered a socket on to the bolt (it was nicked up) banged the socket with a heavy hammer a few times and the bolt came out easily!

Cheers!

Drilling and tapping wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but I never could get the extractor to remove the last bit. I was slightly off center and had to stop before I drilled through the threads. I used an old screwdriver to lift the thinned material edge and needle noes pliers to pull the rest out.

Just weld a new stud on, that's what I did and its sooooooo much easier than tapping and drilling

^agreed - weld a stud on, bolt it on and you are on your way - mine has held without issue for years now (forgot about it to be honest until I saw this!)

Bump:)

Can somebody explain how to properly drill and tap?
I know i have to punch the center and then start with a small bit and work my way up. But i dont know how far in I go, when i up the bit size, if i should be using lubricants, etc.

And thats just the drill, i have no clue what the tap procedure is! D'oh!!

Broke off my bolt today and then got the screw extracter to break off in there too! I band aided it with a U bolt...

Any bets on how long it will last;)
