120/150 and 4th/5th gen 4Runners have tripods; mine are still in great shape at 206K after sevearl reboots. However I'm not sure it would be easy to drive one off the trail unless the broken shaft was pulled out of both cups, then yes it would be NBD to drive it off the trail.
Either it's a freak accident of Toyota forgot how to design tripod CVs (like they forgot how to design crankshafts and main bearings ).
