Picked up a '73 Piggy yesterday and finally got it off the trailer today, which means time for pics! Check 'em out here:

The info: it was bought by the seller about 6 months ago and hauled out of a barn. It's a 73 with what seems to be original paint and a swapped out tailgate. It has all original mechanics, 4 speed tranny, front discs, most of the interior is there other than the driver's side interior panel. Fairly solid body as far as rust and what I've seen on here. No lack of dents to work out, but the rot isn't bad. I kinda dig the roof rack.. might even keep it instead of a safari rack.

The plans so far are to 1) get it drive-able for winter so I can play in the snow :steer: . The engine is a runner, but needs to get flushed out and fresh fluids. I'm more of a motorcycle gear head, so this should be interesting... The engine ran when the previous owner bought it, but the valve cover has been off, so it needs a thorough going though first. I could use some advise on bringing it back to life...

2) Bucket seats and center console (while clearing the rear heater), eventually a new wiring harness so I can wire in heated seats and clean up the rats nest of wires under the dash. I might even relocate the fuses...

3) Engine swap this summer (a perk of being a teacher - weeks of nothing better to do than harass my cousin who is a mercedes diesel nerd into helping me out). Pull the gasser and go to diesel, not sure on a transmission and transfer case yet. Could try and find a merc. G wagon set up, or go for the adapter plate to run a GM one. Kinda wish I could just keep the original 4 speed with the mercedes engine.

4) Custom door panels - right now i'm thinking of using Bamboo flooring. It sounds cheesy, but done right I think it could looks awesome.

5) Lots of rust neutralizer and some rattle-canning. I actually LOVE doing body work. I've done a few motorcycles and repainted my truck. Ideally I'll sandblast the body and start with clean metal, but for one I can't afford the weatherstripping so it might be a while until I save enough pennies for that one. I kind of hate to do too much to the interior like sound deadening and carpeting until I get ready to strip the body totally - otherwise I'll have to do it all over again :bang:

The bad news with the rig - the rear tailgate is missing most of the internals, which will be a pain in the butt to replace and scrounge, so I'll take it as a sign from the gods that I need to do a custom rear hatch and just eliminate that pesky sliding window entirely. I need a dust guard for the flywheel - this one doesn't have one at all, and it's kind of necessary to drive it around up here with gravel and all. Gotta track down mirrors. Need a new windshield, weather stripping for it as well as for most of the doors. The rear bumper is bent into the body, and the spare I got is about the same. The rear seat is torn down, sandblasted and partially powder-coated which means I have no clue how to put is together, and there's pitting that should have been filled before powdercoating... and now it looks terrible! And the biggest thing for me is the wiring. I found a diagram, but I hate wiring! And this rig has no lack of loose orphan wires hanging about...

Nice find

I, too, like the roof rack

Welcome to the addiction, start saving money

Welcome! 4spd tranny and front discs? Not original '73....

Traveling62 thanks for the info... if there was a tranny swap that might explain why the front driveline is waiting to be bolted back in

And yes Catdawg, that's Mount Shasta in the background. I saw the green 55 for sale in the local craigslist but I was beaten to it, so I drove down to Chico. Gotta maintain the Pig population here!

Today I pulled all the loose parts out of the rig and laid them out in the garage. Tomorrow will be a run to Kragen for rust inhibitor, carb cleaner, and some wire brushes/wheels for the air tools.

I know where Weed is, I pass by there on my way up to my family in Shasta County. Nice area, if a bit slow. Showbread recorded the bulk of their albums at a studio there, if I recall correctly.

Nice pig. She'll need some work, but I see a diamond in the rough.

Yup Weed is a slooooow town. Not much to do but play outside and work on a classic cruiser. It's slowly getting closer to running. Got a giant container of marvel
Mystery oil so the cylinders can soak for a bit. In the meantime the clutch lines are begging to be filled and bled. Hope the seals aren't bad. I'm already having nightmares about rust removal... That's normal, right?

And yes, I would be another Lady Piggy owner. Glad to know there are a few others on here :)

Oh yes there are, and welcome to the sty. You do have your work cut out for you on that one, but it will be worth it in the long run. And it's a really GOOD thing you like bodywork!

Congratulations on the swine! :pig:

Any ideas what the electrical component next to the fuel filter is? It has a rather large negative lead coming off it which looks kinda important... It doesn't help that the negative post on the battery still has the clamp with no wires attached...

Figured I'd clean up the loose wires while the cylinders soak for a few days.

I am not sure!
Did it have a winch or plow on it that you can tell?

Not that I can tell. I'll trace the wires and see if it connects to anything with the positive wire. Also while working on it today I think I spied power steering. I'll post a pic tomorrow and maybe someone can help me figure out what it came off of.

It looks like some odd combination of an old ceramic insulator and the back of a dimmer switch.

:)

Air tools are your friend. You will spend lots of time sanding and grinding, but the results ill be worth it!

Can't wait to see the power steering set-up!

Might be some kind of selonoid for an auxilary tank switch

You sound like my wife! wanting to put a diesel in a pig.. we don't have a pig right now but she wants another someday. om617 sounds like a good idea to me! Nice pig!

Sounds like a smart lady!

Update on Piggers: cylinders still soaking. Valve cover is back on after cleaning and a new gasket. Hopefully not too much crud worked it's way into the engine while the cover was loose for how ever many months/years.

Followed the wires from the unknown electrical component and of course they're cut. They went through the firewall into the cab but didn't see anything with the same black/white wires. Posted a few pics of the power steering. Any ideas what it's from? I'm wondering how to tell of my axel is 55 or not since it has power steering and discs.

Also, found a nicely wrapped and tied group of wires tucked under the horns. They run forward behind the battery toward the front. Any ideas what they should plug into?

I don't see any lines running to that steering box?
Am I missing seeing them?
That is location of 55 box, so if it is PS, maybe the PO installed 40 or 55 PS from '79 or later.
Can you post a pic of the lockouts used on the front axle hubs? It may be that you have a later 55 or 40 front axle on there w/ discs.
40 & 55 front axles are interchangeable.
