And what is the price of diesel outside the Front Range Colorado area? Here it's about the same as Super Premium. In 1-2 yrs when the new (european) standard takes effect, don't be surprised that the only advantage is a longer cruising range. Price will reflect a premium for removing the sulphur. Anyone remember the price change from leaded to non-leaded?
Biodiesel anyone? We are getting screwed on diesel here in B.C. already. Used to be about 10 cents a litre cheaper than regular ( 40 cents a U.S. gallon) but now is the same. Diesel cars are going to be more common so the price of diesel will just keep going up. It's good old supply and demand.

Henry, this is going to be kick ass when it's done. What's gonna be our first trip in it? :D

you'll have to blueprint the fawker, because that is exactly what i want too...
esp the diesel and h55f!

me too! I am interested to hear the first road/offroad test... Exiled PLEASE keep up posted.

I have one and can say it was everything I hoped for and then some. It is a real powerful and very heavy duty industrial engine. You literally cannot stop it, it will try to idle right through your brakes and will break something before it will stall! Awesome mileage and awesome power. Vibration is noticable at idle but that is about it. It is a little louder than I thought (it sounds JUST like a 1989-1993 Dodge 6BT Cummins) but is fine, I actually don't mind the noise too much at all. Cruises very well as well! Off road unstoppable. I am at 63:1 but its like having 100:! because it will literally idle over anything! Bone jarring torque! :D

Why . . . not cost but rational

Curious to start a thread re:best diesel engine for an fj60 based on a no cost (not that it's rational) basis. Important factors:
1) Amount of custom fabrication
2) Extra parts costs
3) post conversion complications

I am not experienced but would greatly appreciate your opinions.

Fast forward to present day.........

Diesel is WAY more expensive than gas. As far as I know, I still cannot install a diesel motor here in Cali.
I hopefully still have none of that to worry about as my 2f has 145k on it.

What is the latest update to the feasability of this conversion?

Thanks,
Emee

Where are you that it is WAY more expensive.

It is closer to the same $ per gallon most places I have looked.
Add that to the better mileage, and option to run bio-fuels, better motor life and power.

It is not impossible to convert in CA just very hard to do.

What is your definition of feasible?

Maintenance costs might not be lower. You have the added expenses of fuel filters, injector rebuilds, and maybe even injector pump rebuilds. Also, diesels usually have a larger oil sump than gassers, so you'll need to add the extra cost of oil changes. Although the 2F takes about 7 quarts. Just something to think about.

The 4BT is an anvil. One oil filter, one fuel filter, one air filter. The entire service takes about 45 minutes. Fuel pumps and injector pumps are not regular maintenance items.

Today the price or regular gas is 65 cents/ltr
diesel 87 cents /ltr here in town.
I drive an HJ60 , recently bought , I love it.
Also have a 40 which will be getting a 3B ,4sp, this summer.
According to these prices ,I can't see any saving converting to diesel, but I will run veg oil in the summer which should change that.
This thread came up on a search ,so I desided to pump it to the top, always an interesting topic.
What do you diesel experts see in the future for diesel prices here in Canada. I remeber when I had a diesel VW ,diesel was 10 cents cheaper that regular gas.

Forgot to mention this also included a new 5 speed transmission!!

4BT with an NV4500 and factory split transfer case, correct?

Even with the slightly higher diesel fuel costs, the increased mileage (nearly double from all reports) would still constitute a huge fuel cost savings depending of course on how much you drive.

Will it pay off the cost to convert? Sure, just not as quickly; however, I think the durability, reliability, the ability to run alternative fuel sources, the torque and overall power increase is well worth the cost of the conversion.

In the end, it's still cheaper than buying a new truck, diesel or otherwise and pay as you go = no car payments!:bounce:

Its been 4.5 Years since I last bumped this thread. Great reading through it again.

Wow, this is a good thread, especially when I'm looking at picking one up myself!

prices have remained pretty consistent. Funny how us 60 owners think alike. I just spoke with Proffits a few weeks ago and have started to put pennies away for a diesel swap for the colonel. I figure sometime in 2011.

Saving up is how I did it.

If you are contemplating an imported Toyota motor, watch exchange rates and be ready to act. AUD to USD was very good a year ago, but is near 1:1 now.

This is a really cool thread. But I'm new to this and haven't figured out all the designation for the diesels and what they come from. Anybody willing to give it a try? thx matt

Matt, try this- TLC FAQ - 5.4 Engine Specifications

Vehicle models somewhat follow the engine.. BJ is a B engine, HJ-->H, HZJ-->1HZ, HDJ-->1HD-T, turbos are off numbers like HJ61.

Wikipedia has a pretty good summary under Toyota Land Cruiser.

What about the good old 3b from a bj60.Seems everyone want s high end high hopes. Complete donor truck. Plan would be to:
Do a gasket kit
change/rebuild injectors....

Is it really that slow? Nobody want s it?
I m thinking reliable, simple and vegy oil ready.

Any comments on $$ from an actual swapPPER.

Thanks

Most of the BJ60's here have between 300-500k km on them in rusty trucks still on the road. Most are not turbo. If that's an indication of how good/bad driving a 3B 60 is over the long run.
